How did you fix your peeling grille?
How did you fix your peeling grille?
I'm sick of my peeling grille. It looks like a plastic protective coat is peeling, but it's perfectly shiny and nice under it. If I could just remove that plastic film it would be fine I guess.
Anyone did it? How did you do it? I dont want to go aftermarket, and preferably not paint. Anyone was able to remove that plastic film?
Any suggestions?
Thx

I removed mine but just from the tooth. I used a power washer at the local spray and wash (that is how it peeled in the first place). Anything that was left i just peeled off. I did find the the letter in the NISSAN symbol were also removed. I have a good pic of the front end on my profile.
Fortunately my CMod grille AT-F grill ripoff is on the way I think it's coming from Hong Kong but seems to be taking forever. I can't wait though really excited to start modding. I also have my V-Leds order's still waiting to be shipped (they are taking a ridiculous amount of time, think I may need to call them)
lol, I noticed that too sole.

I got brave, and tested a gel-type brushable paint stripper (from home depot, brand is kr3 but it probably doesn't matter) on a tiny section. After a minute, it took off the coat and had no effect on the underlying chrome.
I masked off the affected area and applied a thick coat to the bad areas. After a couple of minutes, most of the coating could be wiped off with a paper towel. I repeated the treatment and then followed up with some fingernail work and windex and paper towels to remove the last tiny bits.
The result is a clean, chrome colored center section (I left the circular Nissan area untouched). Looks a whole lot better!

Buy chrome polish, polish them with that and a cloth (first time is a hard job, lots of crap to remove, when you do it after that before waxing, its a breeze). They will be all nice and shiny. Immediately wax them to prevent them from tarnishing (if you dont, the next day they will be dull again).
With polish and immediate wax, they are still nice after 3 months of winter. I do it 3 times a year before I wax the car.

I know this is an older thread but... Are the roof strips all chrome from the factory? My 05 SE is silver and the strips are "silverish" so I never noticed a problem. Now that I've seen posts about it I looked and they don't look painted, just faded grey. I had my windshield replaced and they dented them so they're replacing them tomorrow. Are they going to be chrome? That'd be sweet!

-> great find bro, I got the same problem like most of the guys here. I'm going to pass by Home Depot tonight and see what I can find
I had the same problem, it was only on the middle part not the 2 sides w/ the individual small pieces thank goodness........ all I did was get a razor similar to what you might use to take off your tags inside your windshield, I slowly started peeling it back starting from where it was already pealing and it actually came off pretty easy.......... IT IS A HUGE IMPROVEMENT!!!!!
I wasted hours upon hours trying to paint it black, it ended up chipping so bad it was even worse. I am now on a 2nd OEM grille following an accident and this new one dosent peel. You can pick up a new OEM one and be done with it, they must have a more durable coating.
Glad I'm not the only one that has this issue. I thought the previous DA who owned my car didn't take the initial chrome sheet off.
I'm going to try the suggestion that others have done here.
Now, if I could just get the metal tin like edging next to my gear shift to stop rattling, I would be in business.

I replaced it.
Just like everyone else, 05 SE, one recent trip to the car wash yielded little pieces of gray plastic all over my hood... I power washed all of the center section off, but it indeed looks like a shiny 'bucktooth'.
Decided to order this: http://www.stillen.com/product.asp?id=SSESGRL01
A little expensive, but I plan on painting it flat black as soon as it's in and throwing a Nismo badge on it. I'll try and remember to post pics!
P.S. I effin' hate billet grilles on sports and/or tuner cars!!!

I have a way to make it spotless, if you take a old credit card or something to that extent, you can rub against the peeling areas with a fast back and forth motion and remove the peeling. dont use anything like metal or you will scratch the surface. It takes TIME but it looks really good when you are finished. REMEMBER TO ONLY USE PLASTIC THAT IS USED TO MAKE CREDIT CARDS, ANYTHING ELSE WILL SCRATCH THE GRILLE!!!!!
i had the same issue on mine , i will try and get a pic , what i did was go to the local self wash and use the pressure washer to get most of it off the center tooth. While i was doing that the emblem flew off , when i went and grabbed it i noticed the black nissan lettering was gone.
I ended up buying some more double sided tape , i was debating painting the letters the same color as the car but ended up deciding just painting them black again i did it with a duplicolor paint pen , so they came out pretty good, i just had to go around the edges with my x-acto knife to make sure they were straight.

the best thing to fix the peeling is get the gel paint stripper, just make sure you take off the grille first. That stuff says its not good for plastic but it really works great and has no problem cleaning up the grille.

I used Bix Stripper and now it shines like real chrome in the spring of 2010. It does take the black paint off where it says NISSAN on the grill but so what. Wear gloves, paint it on with a brush and it will bubble up. Then I used the hose and sprayed it off. I did it twice to get all of the pieces that wear missed in the first coat. I never repainted the NISSAN letters.
ya, nissan letters will go off even if you do not put gel on it.... strong chemical, just the rinse will remove par of them....
REMOVE THE GRILLE FROM THE CAR BTW. Strong stuff. bubbles paint.
OLD thread..... But btw, been like 2 years and grille is still #1.
