ABS Issue

I was working on this issue a few months back and can't find the thread.

I have the ABS/Brake light on all the time. The ABS shakes briefly after startup and then it ceases to function at all (ABS is shot, car skids on hard braking). This is on my dad's 04 SL, notorious for this. I cleaned the sensors to no avail. It happened right after it snowed 8-10 inches here in Indiana and he was being hardheaded and drove his car through the snow. Must have ruined his sensors and then the actuator in the process.

a) how much is the actuator and am i able to purchase it without the stealership?

b) is this simple to fix? to me, replacing an engine, transmission, or water pump is complicated. replacing an alternator or starter- not so bad.

i think his best alternative is just to get rid of the car- they are going to screw him on the trade in regardless of what is wrong with it anyway (with 63k, they are offering him $11k and his pay off is $16k)

make sure you read the whole thread because i have a how-to on the sensor change that will save you a lot of headaches and will save you broken parts.

Have ya simply checked the fluid level? not being a smart a-- but if these new cars get low at all they will give ya an ABS warning. If not fill that master cylinder plum full and see if it dont go out in drive or two. Probably not the symptom, You sound pretty car smart probably would have caught that. maxman7

I too have I believe a ABS issure on my 04 SE....No ABS lights come on, but after certain speeds when i brake, pedal will shake, and under the hood you will hear some pulsating racket, folowed by another bang when you stop. When I checked it out, I realized as loud as it is inside the car, you cannot hear it outside the car. I listened more to it and after all the cleaning you hear the ABS motor engage. I believe the sound is not mechanical but fluid being released. I took it and had diagnostic ran, and came up nothing. sensors were cleaned and it stopped for 3 days and came back. It comes and goes. I took it to the dealership I heard they can re program it or something. All the idiots did as say they ran another diagnostic and found the ABS mudle going out and would cost $2500 to repair!!!!!!!! I just find it weird that my ABS lights never come on. Sorry to rob this thread I just had a similar issue and wonder at all if this is what you experience
