Right Rear Hub Bearing

Right Rear Hub Bearing

I had a quote to replace this at a shop for $324. How hard is this to replace on my own? I think I can find the parts for around $100. Does anyone else have exprience with this? It turns out that this along with my RSA's teamed up to make my maxima the most annoying car in the world to drive on the highway.

I just replace mines , Driver Rear , its the whole hub...

Autozone has them for 159ish

Nissan is 180 , but since my buddy is a tech i got it for $99 bucks

Your going to need to take the wheel off,

Take the 19mm bolts that hold the caliper and bracket.

loosen the spring so you can release the disc.

Theres (4) 17mm bolts th at hold the Wheel Hub. The wheel hub from Nissan will come with studs.

I want to make sure that this is the right item to replace. It is making an awful noise in the right rear like I have a snow tire back there. There is also minimal vibration coming from that area. I was under the impression that wheel bearing will make noise when you turn and not necessarily at a constant rate while driving.

Also, how hard is to replace the rear hub bearing? I have minimal mechanic exprience, so does this require a special torque or what?

Sounds like the bearing. It would make noise all the time, not when turning.. how would a rear wheel differ when in a turn than normal, ask yourself.

Also, if you need a write-up, im not so sure you should be doing this. Not trying to be an ***, but this holds the brakes and wheel to your car so if you mess it up, could be your life.

I have a quest. On my 04 maxima SL I noticed while changing rear brake pads it looks like ya cant take out bottom caliper mounting bolt cause of some kind of suspension arm is right up against the bolt. can loosen it but no way I see to back it all the way out for the arm. Does that have to be removed to change a caliper, rotor or hub? And is it like that on all 04 to 08 or just the 04,s? It looks like removing that arm would be a pretty good little job. Sorry I dont know the proper part name.

Try rock auto, they sells rear hub assembly for about $80 (same part what NAPA sells for $140 or above), there are some coupons floating around on net makes it 5% cheaper.
I have done it without any prior experience but that does not mean everyone can do it.
Let's say if I am dumb at mechanical stuff but I have done this job, still that does not mean everyone can do it.



Ok here is what exactly you have to do, other members please correct me if I am missing something.
(But I am not responsible if you screw-up something, follow all this if you think you can do it not because I said so)


Find strong rope or metal clothes hanger, either one will be ok to hang your caliper.

Remove tire
1) Loose all lugs about quarter to half turn
2) Jack-up your car, for safety have two jacks just incase.
2) Now remove all lug nuts
4) Remove tire
Remove caliper & rotor
5) Remove caliper sliding pin bolts
6) remove caliper cylinder body, use C clamp to keep cylinder depressed
7) Hang caliper assembly somewhere safely, make sure brake lines stays safe
8) remove pads
9) Remove torque member bolts (second half part of caliper)
10) Remove torque member
11) Now you will remove rotor
Remove hub assembly
12) Remove ABS sensor bolt on back side of baffle plate that holds parking brakes
13) Safely remove ABS sensor and hang somewhere safely
14) Remove plastic hub cover at the same place you removed ABS sensor
15) Remove 4 bolts tfrom the back side at the same area you removed plastic hub cover
16) now remove hub bearing assembly, use rubber hammer if it wont come out easily
17) To install new rear hub assembly, make U-Turn from here
18) Use common sense to apply brake lubricant on sliding pins, WD 40 on bolts, and bolts torque force for all bolts according to nissan repair manual

I just called the same shop and got a quote for $257. Don't wear a suit to a body shop and ask for anything.

I jacked up the rear of the car to see if I could tell a difference between the two wheels. Both of them are rock solid with no wobbles at all. However, when I spun both the passenger rear def. made a whoooshing sound, so I hope they are right in replacing this. I don't know what I would do if they replaced it and it was still making that noise. There really isn't anything else it could be...brand new tires, brakes are fine.

Support the car on jackstands, then use the jack to lift the suspension under the wheel, that way you can remove the bolt. Was quite easy to figure out wasnt it.?

I just did a left rear hub/bearing on my 2002.

The noise sounded like it was coming from the passenger side, but when I put the car on the lift, it was clearly the driver side wheel that had the bad bearing.

I was having the same thing you were, it sounded like i had big mud tires on the back of my car.

Also, neither of my rear wheels had any play at all, which was weird.

if you're trying to replace just the bearing. you wont be able to, its pressed in.

if you can get the whole assembly that's different, it'll just bolt up,
