Unique Problem

Hey guys I think I have a unique problem with my Maxima and was seeing if anybody wanted to give me their input before I have it put up on the lift. At 2000 RPM and in drive, I get what I describe as a grinding sound or metal on metal sound on the right front side of the vehicle. It is pretty pronounced and only happens at 2000 RPM. If I go below or above that it stops. If the car is in neutral it does not make that sound either. I have yet to put it in reverse and get it up to 2000 RPM to see if it makes that sound as well lol.

Figured I would throw it out there and see what yall think or maybe this problem isn't as unique as I think it is.

Thanks in advanced
Scrappy.

If you rev it in neutral no sound? What about reverse? If thats the case then maybe a seized caliper?

Yeah Neutral Nothing of a sort, and reverse though I haven't tried figured would be difficult to get it up to 2000 on the dot. I thought of the seized caliper but I mean it is so spot on the 2000 rpm mark that it didn't seem plausible.

If you have it on a lift than can't you rev it and have someone look ? It's got to be something on that side. Maybe the trans. Does it jerk? I think one of the gears shifts at 2K. The belt is one side and I think its the passenger side.

either an exhaust rattle or loose heat shield rattling in the wind, anything wrong with the trans will not really make noise, it will result in weird shifting

Theres an exhaust/heat shield flange thats known to break and cause noise.

Best bet is to go to a dealership/shop and take a look underneath.

if it is at a specific rpm than it could be a broken motor mount causing the engine to move at that specific rpm and rattle against something. Sounds are hard to diagnose over the internet without sound clips.

Thanks

Hey guys thanks for the inputs, I am planning on taking my car over to a trusted shop to have new struts, lowering springs and rotors replaced. With that I will most certainly ask them to check it out. I am praying it is something simple that just at that particular RPM that the heat shield rattles or something stupid. I just figured I would have thrown this out there since I have learned so much just browsing through. I will definitely update this post when I find out what the problem is.

Okay so an update. Had the Struts replaced, Springs Replaced, all 4 rotors replaced. Sound still existed. Then found a hook-up at Discount Auto who is a Nissan Tech. He told me about this bracket that is under the catalytic converter that cracks and vibrates. Sound plausible but still just at a certain rpm? Went and had my alignment done and sure enough the bracket was completely broke on what side cracked on the other. Had it removed and first started driving off didn't hear the sound. But it has since returned. Things that I have noticed are that when I was on vacation for a week and came back the sound was gone for a while. Each time they had it on the lift and took it back down the sound disappeared for a bit but came back. I am really starting to wonder if it is a Transmission issue and just happens to be grinding at that particular gear. If anybody knows someone who has had this problem I really would appreciate some feedback.

I didn't see you say what specific year you've got. Since there's a couple different 6th gen cars, post the year might help people narrow down what you're up against.

I had a similar issue with a noise around a certain rpm range. What solved mine was replacing that broken bracket, as well as fixing the rattling heat-shield around the y-pipe.

its not that unique of a problem. It's the infamous exhaust rattle. theres a TSB on it too. I'm having my broken bracket replaced in a few days ($200 from stealership). God only knows when It'll crack again, the thing looks so flimsy.

Did u just take the bracket off without replacing?
