leave auto in manual mode?
leave auto in manual mode?
Just wanted to know what would happen if I left it manual mode all the time? For example, I was on the highway and left it in 3rd gear the whole way. The gas burnt up by the time I got off the highway but I had instant acceleration between 70mph and 100mph. It upshifts and downshifts on its own anyway but the rpms stay above 5K. Would it hurt the transmission or engine?
LOL... With all the tranny problems we hear about DAILY... i would say its a VERRRRY bad idea..
Test the idea for us though.. maybe we can get a collection together for your new tranny

my guess would be that it is terrible for the engine, mainly transmission. Are you going to be accelerating from 70-100 very much? I know i don't. Gas prices are going up again and I can't afford that or a new transmission.
I will save you some time, aggrivation and money. Don't do it. I tried this among other things to test the engine and transmission. Engine will hold up fine as long as you keep enough oil in it. Tansmission not so much. Ohh and if you are going to ask another question like what if I leave it in manual mode and let it coast backwards down a hill while in first? Don't do it. It shuts off the car after about 10 feet. Ohh and don't hold the shifter up while in a gear to tap the rpm needle off and let go for the extra burst of energy either. Bad for the tranny and wallet in the long run. drive it like normal. Learn your car. Speed to shifting pattern and I don't recommend letting the rpm's go so high it makes you shift. This is a failsafe to protect your transmission not to give you better shifting performance. I use 1st <15, 2nd <40, 3rd <80, 4th <110, 5th for everything above 110. That's pushing it. normally above 60 on the highway I will be in 5th. 4th for extra umph. 3rd on the highway, above 60, can be pretty dangerous concidering the problems with the transmissions. I have used 3rd on the highway but don't recommend it. The speeds I listed are used only on the track.
Well I left it in third for a 30min trip on the highway. It was great, acceleration was instant between 70mph and 100mph and when I took my foot off it would instantly slow down without having to brake. I was shocked because it felt like the front end was lifting while my foot was down put me and the passenger back in our seats too ! For now on I'll only do it if I have to school some one in a TL or CTS or Jaguar.
