How do I remove the light that illuminates the ignition switch?

Does anybody have any idea on how to get to the light that illuminates the clear ring that goes around the ignition switch? I am trying to change all of the lights/leds, but I have no idea how to get to that one.

Same here. All other (interior) lights have been changed. I know the black ring comes off but other than that, I am stuck too. 1hawaii50, do you know if it takes a standard '194' bulb??

It looks like a regular bulb, but it may be an LED on a circuit board...I can't get a good enough look at it to tell. I'll be pulling the speedo cluster out this week, and I'll see if I can get a better look at from that angle. On a side note, some guys on the other org said to be extra careful when "messing" around with the ignition switch as there is a delicate antennae in there that is needed to start the car, and if you damage it, you'll be screwed. If I can figure it out this week, I'll post back.

Sounds good. Keep us updated. I might try to mess with it on Sunday as well.

This is a good find for me. Being an astronomer, I have red dome and trunk lamps, but the bright green circle on my '01 needs to be covered. Like others, I am wary about poking around there until I figure out my 'new' car. (A hand me down from wife buying new Altima). I'm willing to poke around, and ideally hack the antitheft just to prevent my own inconveniences. The thieves know more than us.

Just from looking up from under the dash, it looks like the wire harness going to the lit area is plugged into a bulb-type socket...this would be good news meaning a simple bulb change. On the other hand, if it is a circuit board, that means soldering on a new LED.

It is a little wedge style bulb with a colored condom over it. I found this out while I had my dash gauges off doing an LED swap. You can reach it from the top if your gauges are off quite easily.

That's good to know, however how do you get to it without the gauges / dash off?

You probably won't. If you pull the speedo cluster, it's very easily accessible. Without pulling it, I could see it, looking up from under the dash, but there is NO WAY to get to it. You want to be very careful when "messing around" in that area, as that's where the antennae is located to allow you to start your car (senses when the key fob is present). If you screw up that antennae, then you are looking at a very costly repair.

OK, here are the pics! This is the stock bulb. You'll notice the white plug near the center of the first pic. The second pic shows the bulb after I removed the orange condom.

Here's the blue LED I replaced it with!

God bless, and stay safe in Iraq! For a bunch of great how-to's, check 6thgenmaxima.org, they've got a great write-up for the dash removal.

Under the "useful information" section, there's a LOT of great info. If I can help with anything, please let me know.

What year is your car? What happened to the trim?

What exactly are you missing? Mine has a flat trim bezel that is the color of my interior. The bezel goes around the illuminated plastic, which goes around the ignition. Take a pick of your ignition and post it here so we can see exactly what you have going on.
