My Maxima was totaled. Now what?

My 06 SE with every option except nav, driver preferred, heated leather memory, Stock XM, with text on display, steering wheel controls, etc. was totaled on Friday. I'm fine, but just wondering what to get next, and wondering how much insurance will give me. It had 63500 miles on it. Looking around here to replace one like it would cost me about 18k-20k. KBB says my car is only worth about 16k tops though.

How much do you think they'll give me, and what should I get to replace it?

Leaning towards these two (I bought my first one on ebay).

What do you all think?

You should be asking for replacement value for your car. The insurance comapany will probably start off low, like around trade in value, but you should get enough to replace your totalled car with a comparably equipped car with similar miles. Look in your area for what others like your old car are going for to get a median price. That should help point you in the right direction. Also, do you still have a loan on the car? Were you upside down on it? If so, do you have gap insurance?

Good luck!

I think you should stop looking on EBAY for a car to begin with, too risky for such a purchase. I recommend you check Autotrader and go see and test drive the car. Kinda hard to do on EBAY unless you are willing to travel around the country. You can also find a max way way cheaper than 18k. The guy I work with bought his 2006 with Elite package for 13k and only 40k miles on it. Just keep looking. I have a little bit of time let me help you. Where are you located?

I purchased the first one off of Ebay, and shipping was only $500. It ended up being much cheaper than I could find locally. I'm about 3 hours from Seattle, 2 from Spokane, and I keep coming up with 18-20k for something similar. Great if insurance gives me that much, but if not, then I could be stuck with a cheaper alternative.

No, I didn't have a loan, I paid cash for it. Thanks for your replies. I'll start looking on autotrader, and hopefully something will come up.

Anybody have any experience going back and forth with an insurance company to get top dollar? Also, I heard that since I was on a work trip, my auto insurance may say that our state Labor and Industries should pay their portion before my auto insurance (progressive pay's theirs).

Here's some pictures of it. I am very impressed with how well the Max held up and helped protect me with its airbags and solid workmanship. I tried to miss a huge peice of metal in the road that was about 6-12in high and rolled it several times.

I was in an accident a little over a month ago and totalled my 02 maxima SE with basic options. KBB valued it at around $8300-$8600. The adjuster was trying to give me $8300 but we haggled a little and got a few hundred dollars out of him and he compensated me $500 for my sound system so I got a little under $9000 when I originally paid $7200 for it a year back so in the end I was happy. Btw I purchased the car with 97k miles and it was totalled at 107k miles, so I drove it for a year and got more money back lol.. but I'm not sure about your question other question

Let us know if you need anything.. just don't settle the claim with the first offer they give you because most times they're lowballing you

of course they are going to lowball you, have to keep all that money we pay them. That is why the insurance agencies are still making profit while everyone else struggles in these hard economical times to pay them. Think abou it. If you pay 1300 every 6 months, that's 2600 a year. Times that by let's say 6 years and you would have given them 15,600 of your hard earned dollars. If you don't get into an accident within that time frame, then they just made all that money off of you. What do you get in return? Piece of mind? I think the government should offer us american's auto insurance along with that crap health insurance they are trying to push on us. They would make alot of money and be able to pay back some of that "FREE" money they keep borrowing from the world banks that charge our government interest. Which by the way is paid for by US the taxpayer.

See I was going to say that if it was not your fault then you should/will get replacement value.
But since this accident is at your fault (unless you can find someone/thing else that is more at fault) then your going to be lucky to get about 75%.

If this is your first accident then I would say that your insurance company should help you out and not try to lowball you.
But definitely go through autotrader or car-max. I've looked around and saw mostly 14k max's so I suggest not paying more than that if your staying with the max.

It actually wasn't my fault, I didn't get a ticket and the State Trooper that filed the report confirmed I wasn't at fault. Since that huge peice of metal was in the road, sticking up, taking my whole lane, there wasn't really anything I could do.

Well in that case you should be in good position. Expect to take replacement value and nothing less.
Don't let them feed you some BS. I had an 04 Altima SE-R and some A$$hole hit me from behind when I was at a stop. Long story short, it totaled my car and I recieved enough to actually upgrade to a max. I think 17K to be exact.

Just be sure not to go with the camry, haha!

Yep, filed my claim online with Progressive. I'll be waiting for a call tomorrow. I hope they get it taken care of quick. I am renting the Nissan Rogue now, its pretty nice. Not Max nice, but nice for a basic end car.

I'll tell you one thing the government failed at: educating you about using proper grammar.

If that's all you got out of what I said then good for you. I think it must have been all that great teaching our government allows in public schools. Thank you for pointing out how horrible my grammar is without showing me exactly what it is about my rambling that was confusing or messed up for you. Ohh and you think I am bad, you will get a kick out of this one. http://forums.maxima.org/buyer-selle...ml#post7288270 try understanding "Trista".

so anyways back on topic. I was looking on craigslist and found a 2006 maxima 6speed manual with elite package and 43k miles for $16,000 here in Hawaii. If it is $16k here than it would be about $10k anywhere else in the states, except maybe New York or San Fran. If only my wife wanted another Max.

New Ride

Cars.com, great site for searching used cars.

It is a good time to buy a car, you should consider new. Dealers are dealing big time right now. I just bought a 2009 CX-9 GT and they took $8,600 off the sticker. It was a demo with 5000 miles on it, but even the never driven CX-9's were going for $7,000 off.

Best to you.

One question I had is that I noticed the 07 Max/Altima's (which I am looking at) neither of them have a SAT button. I had XM installed on my other one. Do you just press the radio button and it'll go through the bands? Do all of the 07 and later models of Max/Alt support XM?

not much to haggle with an insurance company about. i had an 02 Explorer with 24K miles on it. XLT, leather, 4wd V6. a tree fell on it and destroyed it while parked in my driveway.

i paid $12,400 for it and the insurance company wrote me a check for $13,600, which was after my deductible. they simply enter your VIN number and know every option the car had... and they adjust the figure accordingly.

i *tried* to get a little more out of them, but they were pretty firm on that figure. either way- we drove the truck for over a year and made some $ on it.

So, still waiting to hear back from the insurance company on what they are going to give me. In the meantime, I've been looking. I've found a few in the 16-17k range that I would need to have shipped, but they are typically in the 18-22k range. Anyhow, the question I have the only difference I can tell between 06 and 07 are 1) Grill, 2) Spoiler, 3) Radio Console. Are those the only differences? Can I put an aftermarket XM in an 07 like I had in my 06 and have it display text? Is the 07 worth the extra dough, or shuold I just stick with an 06? Thanks.

Oh, if you click on my username you can see the pics I posted. Not sure how to put them in the thread. Also, I realize that my first post made it sound like it didn't have driver preferred, etc. The only thing it didn't have was Nav. It had everything else.

I love how people think they made money off their insurance by getting more than they paid....Like about 90% of people, Im sure you still owe on your car, except the OP and when you get that shiney check, some still has to go to pay off your loan then you use the rest. In your case, you are lucky. If I were you, I would be looking into a used Hyundai Genesis...but thats just me.

Thanks for posting them. I ended up getting a good amount from insurance. I paid $16k for my Max last year with 42k miles on it. Exactly one year later, with 63k miles on it, I got 21,700. I went and looked at an 05 Acura today and I have to say sitting it in 'wowed' me for sure. I then went home and searched online and found a good deal on one with a clear carfax. Its a stick, and I would prefer an automatic, but it looks great. And they said they would take $16,400. What do you all think?

09 Maxima..... With the 2010 out there you should be pretty much there with 21,700. I mean seriously 10year 120k mile warrenty on the transmission and such a sexy car. You allready know if you decide to roll your car again at least you will survive.
