chrome trim help
Hey Everyone, weird thing there...I just bought a 2004 Maxima, black, with has chrome trim going from the front window edge all the way over the top edge of the roof down to the bottom edge of the rear window. This is on both sides of the car. Now, whoever owned this before, for some dumb reason, left the white protective coating stuff that comes on it from the factory on there, except the piece along the back window, that they took the coating off and is nice and chrome, but the rest still has the coating on it and it has been on there so long now, its REALLY stuck on that chrome hard. I have picked a small piece of it off to see the chrome underneath. Any ideas on how I can get that crap off the chrome? or maybe get new chrome pieces? I called Nissan and they want $147 EACH.

That's not the protective stuff, that's the plastic clear layer that's fogged up with oxidation. We all have that same problem...been several threads about it just since I got here a year ago, and there's plenty more before that I'm sure.
There was a brief warrante period for this, some guys were lucky to get them replaced, only to find the same problem within a year. I don't even think Nissan is replacing them under warrantee any more.
Most guys have painted over it, I've been semi successful with using a mild rubbing compound to polish off the oxidation. You're results may vary...

hmm
that is strange, because like I said, I picked off a piece of it and it looked chrome underneath...?? I also took it to my Nissan Mechanic friend, and he thought too it was that protective stuff. if it is just the oxidation, then how come the piece along the back window is still all nice and shiny but the rest of it is like this?

There was a warranty issue with those fading, had mine replaced years ago.
Your best bet is painting or covering with vinyl.
BTW, I know you're new but the search feature works wonders.
Every issue you've made a thread on has been discussed hundreds of times...

Trust me, we've all had the same level of disbelief you're experiencing, then learned to deal with it one way or another...

it is plastic over thin fake plastic chrome. now that you removed the plastic, you can also peel the "chrome".
the rear is real metal chrome.
a bunch of threads on this. cover or paint.

if anyone has faded chrome trim....
Hey Everyone, I know a lot of people have had issues with their plastic chrome trim getting faded looking from oxidation. well, I mine was pretty bad, and I used some Turtle Wax Polishing Compound and rubbed hard on it, and it worked great. looks almost like new again. just thought i would pass that along to help anyone else out.

Yeah, that's what I've been doing for about a year now since I got the car. Trouble is, you have to to it frequently. Every month, maybe every other month, and I'm parking in the shade most of the time during the day...
