Did you remove the cables and check for corrosion?

not true- starter can get lazy overtime not giving up completely and giving you low battery symptoms, I had one of those on 97 maxima.

I concur I raised my brow too when I read it, do u know where starter is located on 05 Max, I think I found it but just wanna verify with forum. it look like it may have a protective shield on it, under front of engine

sorry, not sure where starter is located on 6th gen, since I just got 2004 recently myself. I owned a 97 for many years though and it was a very straighforward job. Just looked at 2004 FSM (yours is same gen) and yes, it does say for 5 speed auto trans model starter has some shield over it. Just look for it, starter should be sticking out somewhere in contact with flywheel, turning it eventually. I beleive its held in place by two bolts and that's it, well, plus connector. Good luck!

I'v noticed my car doing the same thing, it will start but it doesn't fire up like it used to just a month ago. Dealer said my battery failed the test, weird because everything else electrical works fine. I gotta check it further and will probably replace it but not at the dealer for $150.

My Max had this early on. After several battery tests (all were good/pass btw), cleaning corrosion and messing with the alternator i decided to grab a new battery.
Worked perfectly. Been like this for about 1.5-2 years now.

Yeah could be the starter or battery. Ended up being the starter on my step son's 98 Max. It would turn over slow and eventually just wouldn't turn over.

Battery

My 2004SE with 90Kmiles is currently on the 4th battery. Everytime the car starts slowly (or taking several tries to start) I just replaced the battery and it has solved the problem.
My last defective battery (96mo. warranty) was dying after 40mo. I got it prorated to a new one (I am sure to keep the receipt handy for battery).
I was sick of the posts badly corroded. So I gave it a good cleaning. Afterward, my car has been running so much better: throtte response is so smooth, even the trans seems to upshift less-harshly and the abrupt downshifts (at slow speeds) have been absent.

With all the electronics on cars now, I have always felt it is worth it to buy a quality battery. (IE Optima) My yellow top Optima lasted over 5 years on my 95 Maxima. One of the first things I did on my 06 Max.

I think its also the battery. I had the same issue just recently and I thought it might have been the starter since I had bought a battery exactly 1yr before. Turns out it was the battery. These standard batteries from auto parts stores are not good. Next time I have to get a battery its going to be either a Die Hard or Optima.

Put the front of your car up on blocks or stands, remove the engine splash-guard, and it will be right in front of you on the driver's side of the engine bay with the flywheel. Belts and pulleys are on the left side (passenger side) of the engine bay, with the alternator being in front just below/down from the oil filler cap and dipstick.

Starter

Hey guys,

Ive been browsing the forums for a while now and you guys have been a big help with some minor fixes.

I recently bought a 04 maxima used from a local dealer. 101k miles on it. Runs well mechanicaly, but every once in a while(not a regular basis, 2 times in 3 weeks) I go to start it and it just does not start. No click, no slow start(dosent fire at all). All of the cluster lights/radio, and normal lights come on, so im assuming there is pletny of power to it.

I have to crank the steering wheel all the way to one side or the other and then it starts right up. Is this a common issue with 6th gen?

Any help is appreciated guys.
