hey are the 2004 nissan maxima sl trannys 4 speed?? i have a 2004 maxima se thats 5 speed. i want to buy a parts car. do i only need to get a se as well or will a sl work

Nope they have a 5 speed auto like you got or a 6speed manual.

the early 04 trans came with a 4 speed from what i understand, but also came with a 5speed, call the dealer with ur vin and theyll let you know

Early 04 SL models built in 2003 were 4AT. At some point they changed to 5AT just like the SE. It is easy to tell the difference by simply looking at the stick.

6 speed manual only came with seldom SE models.

the 4AT was a left over of the 2002-2003 Models, they decide to take a volvo tranny and thought it would be cool to stuff a tip tronic 5AT into the *new* maxima.

and figure in 2004 *hey theres alot of complaints* in 05-06 they started fixing the issue by replacing the selenoids which had lesser issues
