Nope I haven't.

Update:
Got my max back from the dealership yesterday. The replacement tranny has 60k on it, and it costed me about $1700. They didn't charge for labor.. Thank god.

Shifts smooth with no problems. For now...lol

Hoping it will remain this way.

OK... now, were talking about the 5 speeds if I recall
my labor rate is 60/hr i know dealerships charge like 90-120
i can get that trans used for maybe 800-900 dollars with a 6 month warranty
do the math they charged you

5.7 x $120+900=$1584
and very well I might add

Hey guys! I have an 04 SE and began experiencing the hard slam during 2/3 shift. Scared the crap outta me and want my Max fixed. After reading this thread, does replacing the tranny actually fix the problem? has the cause been identified? I'm no car tech, just an owner that loves my car and misses driving it. Supposed to have an appointment to get it diagnosed tomorrow, wondering if I am wasting my time.

You did not mention like miles on your car, does this happpens all the time or only once transmission gets warm, reverse to drive and drive to reverse slam, when last your transmission was serviced, etc, etc...

One cause has been identified is faulty valve body solenoids. It can be fixed by just refurbish existing valve body or by replacing valve body with rebuild one. Either way it will cost around $1000 plus or minus few hundred bucks. I would suggest you to read through the sticky "RE5F22A TRANSMISSION FIX" in this forum to read what others have said and also post any of your questions there.

Nissan really farked this up.

I finally got my car fixed.....I ended up getting a brand new valve body with the corrections made to it....ended up having to do a tranny overhaul....they had to open it up and do lots of fixing and replacing....also ended up getting a new torque converter....needless to say my car was in very bad shape

Sry Kev, it has 98,000 miles on it. Thanks for pointing me in right direction. Yeah, my friend works for Nissan and her service guys laughed when she asked them about the tranny issue. Told me use the $ I'd spend diagnosing and "fixing" the problem as a down payment for a new car.

It's not always the valve body even though it happens to be the problem in a lot of cases. Mine turned out to still have the problem after they did the rebuild, replacing my valve body that had the Transgo Kit with a VBX one with Sonnax parts, and replacing the torque converter. It turns out that my transmission computer was bad which is extremely rare. It was Cottman transmission who did my repairs and said they had never seen a maxima with the transmission computer being bad until they saw mine.

Wow, I had this exact issue and Mine failed at roughly 83000 miles. Thought that issue was isolated to my Maxima. Didn't know it could cause damage to the enginr though

I have an '06 Maxima and I too am having transmission issues since 2009 and I'm glad to know it's a widespread issue and not just me. I've contacted Cory and I hope that he can move forward with the class action lawsuit. I have also written a letter to Nissan Consumer Affairs and have given them the websites to all of these complaints. I will let you all know what comes of it. Nissan needs to be held accountable for their wrongdoing!

Everyone please go to the NHTSA website https://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/ivoq/ and file the same complaint you have posted on this website. It's really quick and easy.

How many previous generations of Maxima's have you read about here in the forums with not even half the issues on their transmissions or no issues at all?

And to go to the heart of it, Nissan doesn't recommend any maintenance on the transmission, not even fluid changes on the 3.5 SE (I don't know about the SL), I believe they call our transmission a sealed unit. But then look at all the issues we have. Maybe that would count for something.

I have never done anything to my transmission, it now has 118,000 miles. I was glad to see what you wrote because I know the manual dosent say it is mandatory to replace the fluid. I would venture to say that atleast 75% of the people ont his forum have atleast changed it once, and many several times. It might be counterintuitive, but I really think less is more in this case?

Count me in. It's totally ridiculous that Nissan doesn't acknowledge this tranny issue with so many people it's affecting. I love my Nissan but will think really hard before buying another. You would think it's in Nissan;s best interest long-term to satisfy their customers?

I ask that someone please PM me with any potential litigation. I'm extremely interested.

I guess what is most disappointing is there does not seem to be a root cause analysis done by Nissan on this. May be I missed it. Is there a technical service bulletin on this like the tensioner issue ?

From what i read so far here and I am still not done yet--your transmission slips due to

1) Malfuntioning of Cam Sensors
2) Design flaw in Value Body
3) Not changing trasmission fluid (sounds ridiculous)
4) anything else ?

1) I understand why that could be bad. And hopefully is the issue in my case.
2) What I dont understand is - is the whole trasmission design flawed or just the valve body ? changing valve body - Is this a permanent fix or a temporary ?
3) Changing transmission fluid. I dont think I ever changed transmission fluid in any of the cars I owned before and most had over 150,000 miles on them. Nissan or Toyota. I dont believe transmission can go bad just like that. But then I never owned a 2004 maxima before. lol. And it is very difficult to believe the fluid could be causing it or changing it would fix the problem - I know it does not hurt to change it.

I bought my Max used with 110k miles and changed the fluid when I got it. It has been fine since and I hope it remains that way. I also don't drive very hard or shift unless I am at a complete stop.

Hello to everyone here...I had my transmission replaced late June 2008 with 100,000 kms...that's only 60,000 miles. I'm from Montreal, Quebec however this car was manufactured in the USA. My car is a 2005 Maxima SE with the Sunroof BTW. Back in October 2010 on the advice of my service advisor, I changed the transmission Oil at aprox. 50,000 kms or about 35k miles. Now I am getting really rough shifts when the transmission is cold and when I checked underneath I noticed that there is some transmission sweating (small leak) from seals. I had a 2004 SL that Nissan and my dealer bought back in Oct 2004 because the car was a lemon. That car blew it's transmission at only 9,000 miles or 15,000 kms! This is the third time in less than 7 years that I've had major issues with my transmissions on 2 separate 6th gens albeit a 4 speed SL and now a 5 speed SE....that is absolutely ridiculous! Not a single car that I have owned included a 1990 Honda Accord EX-R or a Mazda 626 ever had an issue with the transmission until well over 120,000 miles! This is BS....I just e-mail Cory too...even though it's a Canadian purchase...let's not forget the car was manufactured in the USA and is essentially the same car that is sold in the USA too.

Nissan should step up to the plate and admit that their transmissions are faulty and offer a 10 year warranty on these. BTW - My extended warranty ended at the end of November 2010....let's see what they say.

For the record, Nissan doesn't make the 5-speed trans, it's made by Aisen-Warner and it has massive problems in the Volvo's, saabs, & GM's that used it as well.

Most of the time it's in the valve body, the linear selenoids have an easy fix, I also found a bad plastic check valve (The plastic check valves were only used on early style aw55-s50 vb's) and I beleive I had some plate leakage as well. I'm crossing my fingers that this guys car just needed these valve body problems fixed, transmission damage can result pretty quickly when low pressures from a valve body issue cause clutches to slip.

If you own a 5-speed and start feeling things going south bring it right in to a trans shop & have the valve body rebuilt, or tell the stealership you will pay $1k for a new valve body if they put it in for free

I am sure he mean to say even though transmission was made by Aisen-Warner in maxima, Nissan should still held responsible for using transmission that was made by Aisen-Warne. Later, it's Nissan and Aisen-Warner both require to short their own things out.

Hey Chris... Finally got in contact with Cory at the lawfirm. Requested I get some documentation from Nissan stating issues with the tranny. Only issue is, I dont think they will provide anything in writing because of all the damn mods.

Gonna check out some shops out in your stopping grounds (Brooklyn lol lol) and see what they say first then bring it to Nissan.

I received a call back from Nissan stating that they received my letter and to tell me that I have to take the car in to have a diagnostic done before they can proceed with anything. So, maybe you all should write a letter to Nissan Consumer Affairs. If you would like me to post the letter that I wrote, let me know.

Why would anyone have to spend ANY money on a transmission that has only 35k miles on it...that had replaced the original transmission too...I say fix it right the first time so that we don't have to keep going back...

AprilFool - Please post or send your letter to me. I want to use it as a template to mail a letter to Nissan Consumer Affairs. In fact every Nissan owner with transmission problems should do the same. Even if you have already spent $'s out of your own pocket for transmission repairs, there still might be a chance to recoup some of your $'s.

Thanks in advance.

To Whom It May Concern:

I have been a loyal Nissan customer for 11 years now. This is the third Nissan I’ve owned and I am now having problems with Nissan for the first time. I have a 2006 Maxima that began having transmission issues at around 60,000 miles and I am really disappointed; this is happening prematurely. There are also tons of online reports and based on those, this seems not to be an isolated issue, but rather a widespread one. There seems to be a flaw with transmissions from about 2004-2007. I love Nissan and am considering the Murano to be my next car, but not if I’m going to have these same issues. I am writing to you to ask if you would work with me and cover a goodwill repair and I’ll remain a loyal customer to Nissan because I do love your cars and I always tell everyone how great they are. Below you will find some of the websites of the online reports I mentioned earlier. Thank you in advance for your prompt attention to this matter.
