So I got the dreaded p0420 on friday...

I have been reading posts and trying to figure out if this is something that i can fix it myself. I did the same route as most have done and went to Autozone to get it diagnosed and it came up with that code. The guy said it could be either the oxygen sensor or the cat. I really don't want to have to take this to the stealership if i don't have to. I don't feel like being raped this week. Is there a way that i can figure out if it is one or the other?

2007 with 105k on it btw

Its the cat. Autozone only wants to sell parts not fix problems. My cat went out at 72k, luckily it was covered under the federal emissions warranty of 8/80k.

I feel like I should know this but i don't. So, if I buy the y pipe will that technically replace that cat or is the one that is failing before the y pipe? I was planning on getting one soon anyway. This would just speed up the process.

Damn, i couldn't have been that lucky. I really was not planning on spending that much right now. How much would the just the cat cost to replace you think? I don't think I would want the high flow, i don't want the car to be too loud.

I think it would be cheaper to get the hi flow cats than regular cats...racingline has them for 535 and 774 with the y pipe and I think regular cats are 350 each ( I may be wrong)

My max threw the same code a couple months ago. The OEM cats are about $700 to $800 EACH. I ordered the HFPC through racingline with the y-pipe and it's as much as a single precat.

Does anybody know if the racingline precat and/or Y-pipe is CA legal?

According to my local dealership my code P0420 is the passengers side precat and needs to be repalced.

I would rather spend the $700+ for both side than the $1300+ for a single side.

I'm not sure what other peoples opinion of them are, but Rock Auto carries an aftermarket brand of cat that runs about $200 per side. I just have the rear changed, and will be doing the front side later this week(both should be done, and I'm an idiot and changed the wrongone). I had a small local shop do mine and he only charged me $200 in labor which frankly I think was a steal. Keep in mind I'm dealing with the 3.5 in my wife's quest but for the most are I'm sure this all applies.

Note: Just checked yours, $170 and $280 depending on the side you need. Also there is always a 5% discount code online for them if you go that route. There maybe better routes to take with the racingline stuff, but I doubt any cheaper routes. Good luck!

They are not CA legal ( but are 49 state legal). However they will physically pass the CA sniffer test as a member on the NC website had them tested and posted the test results

FYI. none of the ones on rockauto are CA legal either technically

How much is the exhaust sound changed with the Racingline y-pipe and hi-flow cats?

depends mostly on the exhaust system you have. OEM mufflers will change slightly, but not by much untill higher rpm.

Nismo systems will get a hair louder and get a touch more G35 ish

magnaflow, ebay, and greddy will get noticeably louder but not dramatically

Unless Nissan decides to cover me on the Emission Warranty being only 141 miles over the 80K I am going to have to pay the inspection fee and get the car out from the dealership and figure out what how I am going to get this fixed.

Has anyone tried to pass the CA smog (sniffer) test with either one of these Precats?

Just received a call from Nissan Corp telling me that "Pre Catalytic Converters" are not covered under this. So even though I am only 141 miles over the limit they will not cover it.

That's BS. I'd keep pushing them... contact the BBB if they don't budge. It's federal law that car companies cover emissions for 8y/80,000m. Surely you've been having this problem more than 141 miles ago..........................

I am still going to try to push back, I spoke to the rep again and she said she would talk to their techs to see if there is something Nissan could do. "I am working for you" she said, I should be getting a call tomorrow afternoon. Hope Nissan pulls through on this.

Well at least that's something. The labor still sucks though. They managed to help and screw you all at once! At least you're getting new cats.

OP, any updates?
