A good cool dealer would have done what they call a "goodwill" repair for free for you with you being barely over the mileage!

2005 Maxima secondary timing chains and tensioners

At 80,679 miles I had the following TSB performed. Dealer quote was $1,200 for the TSB work. I managed to pay only $638 which included tax. The other $600 was goodwill by Nissan and the dealer. I guess it paid off to have oil changes performed at the dealer.
I attribute the goodwill to:
a. oil changes at the dealer
b. sang I love Nissan and want to buy another one
c. do b. all over again when I opened complaint with Nissan 1
d. I previously owned another Nissan and had the Vin # to prove it.
e. Be nice as can be and say I felt violated by Nissan knowing the issue existed and proved it with stating TSB #'s and all the internet articles on the problem.
f. Didn't tell them I think they all suck !!!

MAXIMA / ALTIMA / QUEST; BUZZING / WHINING NOISE FROM TIMING CHAIN AREA

This bulletin has been amended. PARTS INFORMATION and CLAIMS INFORMATION have been amended. Discard all previous versions of this bulletin.
APPLIED VEHICLES:
2004-2008 Maxima (A34)
2004-2006 Altima (L31) with VQ35 engine ONLY
2004-2009 Quest (V42)

IF YOU CONFIRM:

There is a high frequency buzzing / whining noise coming from the secondary timing chain system.
^ The noise should increase in frequency with engine speed (RPM).

^ If the noise does not increase with engine speed, the timing chain system may not be the cause. Refer to the appropriate section of the Electronic Service Manual (ESM) for further diagnosis.

(KRRZ350's note- take the belts off & confirm sound still there or not)

ACTION:

1. Replace both secondary timing chains and both secondary timing chain tensioner "shoes" with the ones from the PARTS INFORMATION section of this bulletin.

I recently did this repair on my Fiancee's 04 Maxima. I took pictures throughout the process thinking maybe I could make a walk thru but as I went on the picture were less and less as my frustration was more and more. Ended up turning out ok though. I uploaded the pictures to a gallery, not sure how to link those here. If anyone wants to create a walk thru feel free to use my pictures if they help. Anyone attempting this feel free to contact me for questions.

Is it sure that the problem will happen, or not? Been using mobil 1 since 30k miles. So far im at 100k miles. Seems fine.
Im getting a constant high pitched hissing sound lately but it seems to me like a bearing somewhere. Like alt, etc.

Does not have to be. It really depends what year your max is. If you have a 04-06, then your main tensioner guide for the main chain HAS failed already. You would get a high pitched whine noise as you go up the RPM.

The shoes though not necessarily, i have a 04 motor with 82K miles and the owner changed oil with mobile 1 since he got the car new, and looking at the shoes; they're worn but still have plenty until they hit the actual metal part of the tensioner. However, the main chain guide has failed and is broken.
Starting with 6.5 gens (07-) they updated the main slack guide with black plastic which is much more beefier, but did not fix the shoe tensioner until 7 gen maxima.

heres my 04 maxima...looking into buying the parts tomorrow...do you guys think its just the parts that need to replace or do you think its more is involved then just your secondary chains. its been making this noise from about 110k and now its at about 145k...definitely got worst and is clicking at higher rpms while on the road.

I say while your in there change everything. Chains , guides , tensioners , water pump and oil pump. Once the cover off comes you never will want to go back in there for something else later.

There is a guy on youtube that has been doing this job and yes he does mess up from time to time but you gain a wide amount of info on how much involved the job is

check it out and follow all 8 or 9 videos he has

Oil pump? Now why would you want to to that? That will the make the job even more difficult.

My 2007 Murano (just @100KMiles) sounded like that for two straight days (the idle got very rough at times too). I thought it must be the timing-chain thing. But my trusting mechanic said it's a valve-lifters issue. He gave my two options:
* $1800 valve&lifters job.
* $25 bottle of BG oil additive (professional-grade).
Of course I picked the cheap options... by the 2nd day, the noise was gone, the engine sounds & runs beautifully. The additive should be mild and stays until the next oil-change.
It's been only a week and it's great so far.

As for my 04Maxima, I'm having some 1-2sec clapping noises @startups for the last several years. And the whine-noise the last 1.5yrs. Keeping the oil-level helps a bit with the noise but can't eliminate it. After the Murano saga, I just threw in a new oil-change with a bottle of Rislone engine-treatment. The very next day, the clapping noise stopped.
It has been two days and many startups .... no clapping noise. Will update the long term observations. The whine is still there and I will ask the Mechanic to looks at it next time.

Im debating on doin this myself I got a 05 176k miles and its making the clacking sound. I just had my kids altima done at the dealership for 1k as a side job but now can no longer get a hold of the person who helped me out. So ive read the threads and watched videos seem hard but not impossible. My only concern is how do the chains come off and is there a sp3cific way they go back on. I dont wanna mess up
timing. The dealer changed everything even the gears so im tempted to do do everything they did but wont if I dont have to
