timing chain....

Okay so i left my local shop today and he said that the chain in my engine is making all that racket that i hear. The gentleman didnt even look at the engine he just listened to it.... I asked him how much it would be to fix. he then told me that i would be better to A. get a new engine to put in or B. trade my vehicle in. These were neither the answers i wanted to hear. It agitates me because he has been my mechanic for the longest and has not once said anything to me about the timing chain. I have a 2004 nissan maxima se with 154000 miles on it. My last maxima (96) i drove it till it had 242000 miles on it. What do you Maxima gurus think? should i find a new to get part fixed or trade vehicle or get new motor for vehicle.

Did he ever give you a price? In casual reading I recall most with this issue that go through the dealership spend about $1500. A bit less than that at an independent garage. Read up, there are several current threads about this on the first page.

I'm surprised he'd recommend a replacement engine for something like this. He must not know what the phu<k he's doing in my honest opinion...
