P1402 & P0420

Max has 100,000 on it. About 3 months ago started getting a P1402. Reset, came back several times. Dealer said EGR was stuck open so I replaced it. Drive good for a month or so, P1402 comes back with a P0420. Reset, but only the P1402 comes back, has done so several times, P0420 did not come back again. Time frame is about 3 weeks.

Back to dealer, says the new EGR appears stuck. Dealer says could simply be a bad EGR or a pre-cat could be disintigrating fouling the new EGR. The car goes to dealer in a few days for assesment (engine was too hot to look into while there today). OK, so here is the question...if I need the cat should I just get a Nissan stock or go aftermarket?

I have seen several threads but many seem older, looking for people who have actually done the aftermarket. TIA. FYI, I am hoping to keep this car for awhile.

make sure they actually replaced the EGR... i just went through this and had to peices in my EGR..... if the cats are bad go after market.... $1100 at the dealer ship plus install vs 185 on ebay for headers and 300-500 install, its pretty straight foward...... of see if u can get cats off a junkier if u really want to have cats

Thanks for the advice. They replaced the EGR because I supplied it myself & looked afterwards.

The EGR is easiest to see from the passenger side of the engine. It is between the firewall & engine, near the top. Has several small/medium pipes connecting to it. About the size of a softball. Here is a picture of one...http://www.partstrain.com/ShopByDepa...AN/MAXIMA/2005

The EGR us located right below the throttle body. The pipe comes out the side of intake manifold n runs into the EGR valve.....

EXACT SAME PROBLEM

yeah i had the p1402 then replaced a brand new egr valve, after a week or so the CEL comes on shootes out the p0420 so i brought it back and the guy told me it was because something having to do with the grade of gas i use. ive been driving for more thdan 8 monthes, but the CEL comes on and off with the p0420 usually comes on while i'm driving highway.

brought it to the dealer recently said it was my catyltic converter, and o2 sensors, I don't trust the nissan service guy, total douche and seemed he just wanted commision. either way i'm tryign to figure out how do i know if its the actual catyltic converter or just o2 replacments or what. and as of now the cel light is off but before i starrt replacing sneors and catytci converters imma try and clean it First... i'll reply after all that

When we pulled the pre-cats off my 100,000+ mile Maxima the insides were pretty bad. If your Max is over 100K it is very possible that the cats are bad. I actually suspect that the EGR was OK, but they had changed it first chasing the P0420. The cats are expensive, but changing them fixed the problems, I think that we changed one of the sensors too.

Good luck to you.

if you run aftermarket headers, will it throw an engine code? How hard is the install?

I say it's your cats that are bad. I have seen this code on a few different cars (Toyota, Honda, Ford) and the fix was to replace the cats.
