04 SL whining noise
Hey all,
I recently bought an 04 SL. I used to own a 4th gen.
I recently noticed this high pitched whine coming from the passenger side of the engine bay. The noise only shows up if I take a short drive or rev the engine up a bit. At start up and idle, the noise is not there. Also if the noise is there and I shut the car off and turn it back on, the noise is gone until I take a short drive or rev the engine a bit.
I found this video on youtube, this is exactly what my car sounds like.
Any suggestions?

I'm sure the guys on this forum will know exactly what it is. It's been discussed on many threads here...I promise... I Wish I could remember exactly what they said it was. Can't recall at the moment. A few of the guys on this forum had this issue and resolved it. I guess one of the flaws our car has.
But just do a quick search and type in whining. You will definitely find it.

Ok I checked out the sound some more. Only comes on after driving for around 2 miles or more. A drive down the street and the sound will go away on idle.
When I start the car initially the sound will be gone. I give it a couple of revs and the sound will show up but then go away as the revs go back to idle.
After driving for a bit the noise will be there at idle. When give it a few revs, the sound lowers in pitch as the rpms go up and increases in pitch as the revs go back down to idle.

Highly likely its the tensioners. It might be idler pulley. I suggest removing all the belts and starting the car. If the noise is still there, tensioners are left as most logical cause from that area.
