Thinking about buying a Maxima

Hello all, awesome forum you guys have here. Been snooping around for a few trying to find some answers and checking out things that can be done with the Maxima. I test drove an '07 3.5 SE, pretty much loaded, and I fell in love with it! The dealer was asking $17,200 +tax, tags, fees, etc. I talked him down to 16k out the door, everything included. The car is in great shape as far as I can tell, interior and exterior are almost flawless except for some scratches on the headlight covers, which I assume could be sanded and buffed out. It's a 1 owner car, still has all manuals and floor mats, etc. Carfax is clean, good service records. The only thing bothering me is the mileage, it has 79k miles. Does this sound like a good deal? Should I be worried about the mileage? I always hear Nissans are good for over 200k miles as long as you take care of them, but never having owned one, I'm not sure.

Seems very high to me. Check kbb.com and edmunds.com for an estimate of pricing high and low.

I just bought an '07 SL with 95k on it and an A/C compressor that will need replacing in the future for less than 10k. IMHO you can do much better than that.

Thanks for the input. I've checked KBB and Edmunds, also Carfax. They all say the value of the car is anywhere from 14.5k to 15.5k, very good and excellent condition respectively. Carfax says the one in question is actually at or under book value for the options it has. This is dealer retail blue book value, of course. Private seller shows up a bit lower, around 13.5k or so. I haven't managed to find a decent one from a private seller, and there aren't really too many for sale in my area at all to be honest. If anyone knows of a good deal on one in the eastern NC area, please let me know.

Keep look around man. These car are dropping in value very quickly and with the new generation coming out soon it will be even lower. Wait a few more months and you'll get a really good deal

Go eBay. I may sound crazy but I've bought three cars there and all have turned out excellent.

I would stick with TMV value from edmunds and aim to stay below that. Patience will pay off. It took me 3 weeks to get the one I wanted but eventually I did.

That's way too high. As was said before, you can get a nice 7th gen for that money.
Check out autotrader.com and cars.com for "real" prices on cars actually for sale.

Interesting: Location seems to be playing a role here.
Within 100 miles of zip 27530 (guessing it's close to OP)

2007-2008 Maximas below $17.5K with less than 75 K miles (8 results)
http://www.autotrader.com/cars-for-s...Id=94408&Log=0

That being said, 2009+ Maximas below $17.5K (3 results)
http://www.autotrader.com/cars-for-s...Id=94408&Log=0

I like the newer cars better at that price point...
Consider looking a little farther away.

Thanks. I think my issue is that I'm a sucker for all the "bells and whistles", lol. I'm gonna be paying for it, apparently. The newer ones do seem like a better deal, though.

Looked around a bit more, think I may have found an '09 SV pretty loaded. If I can get him down on price I may go that route. Maybe. I really dig the 6th gen look. Thanks again for the help and advice.

If you like the 6th gen look, don't let us stop you! We thought the price was a little high, but it seems that $16K out the door with fees included is not so easy to beat!

Good luck!

I bought mine new and now I'm at 108k The common things at that mileage are the Auto transmissions, struts because I live in the city (KYB GR2s work great for me) 2 out of three of my cats went bad with 2 o2 sensors. The high AC hose is prone to leaks, I had to replace mine. BEWARE of the timing chain fairy!!!!! Thank God I have a connection at a local dealer. I also hear they have bad rear wheel hubs. So far I'm ok with that. 200k not so if you drive the car. Mine was care free until 60k. Last month was a crank sensor and let me tell you I'm the type to stay on top of my cars and try to use OEM parts unless there's a big improvement on the life of the product. I use this as my work car. See if you can get any details on what was done to the car before buying. Transmissions, Timing chains, & OEM cats are not cheap fixes.

No don't do it, I've owned Hondas and Toyitas and currently own a 2004 , the Nissan has been bar far the worst of all my Japanese cars, understand I'm not bashing as I still own my Maxi, but it's cost me nothing but money since I've owned her, transmission, amingst other things, I'm done with Nissan never should have left Honda/Toyota! But hey luckily I live in LA so I can ride my bike while I park this half working car, engine is great though, it loves to be pushed, but **** Nissan for tossing this car out and not doing a recall! Lesson learned like I said I still own my Max so I'm giving an honest assessment, a wise man once told me Honda/Yoyota are A+, Nissan is like a C and they really are it's why they damn near drowned a few years ago, NEVER AGAIN

i agree with you but i love my maxima but i got the 03 with 6 spd and my 00 had issues starting at 100k but i would have never bought a 6th gen cause of tranny problems unless i was getting a 6spd. and i def agree with you that honda/toyota have the best reliability all the honda i owned gave me worry free reliability never had to fix anything it seems lol and i had 225k on my accord 85k on my tsx and my 80k maxima has a few issues of its own CMON it has lower miles but i am not suprised. but Nissan is the 3rd best japanese car maker imo after honda and toyota. but the maxima engines when the repairs and maintenance are done they are truly strong built engines. the only reason i chose another maxima and chose to lose some reliability is that its still a reliable car very reliable if you compare it to the american car makers and i can whoop alot of sports cars and still being a fwd grocery getter
