2004's have a lot of transmission problems. 2007 is the best one to go. Check this website out.

You can't say the 04's have transmission. Every year has their own problems and unfortunately the 5spd is very common for transmission failure. Now on the other hand the 4spd seems to be holding up just fine and the 6spd MT seems to be the best outta the rest. IMO that CVT is the worst invention ever and it makes any car boring to drive, especially when you feel your car is over reving. Besides the price between a 04 and a 07-08 is different due to the age difference and technology

I'd recommend the 06, just because I hate CVT. But, if your going for looks I'd say the 07 or 08.

Get the 6spd MT and if you can't drive stick, learn. It will save you a lot of transmission headache. Had mine since 06 and still going strong, I even race mine and she still drives like a charm

**** ****.. i love that CVT man.... Test drive the car. buy the one you like for the money you got.... then come back here for modding...... go to the test drive knowing that the CVT 07 max does not shift and it wont feel too odd.
Buy an 07 or 08 SE man you will love it.

For what its worth, I drove a 2004 from 9 miles to 130,000 on the original transmission and it operated the same the day i traded it in as when i bought it new. I didnt abuse the car and believe the high failure rates on this board are becuase most enthusiasts push the car very hard and I didnt. I could be wrong, but i think theres some correlation.

I have an 08 and love it. 80,000 miles +. If you decide to go for an 04 or 05 automatic, just see if theres any way you can have service papers, check if transmission has been replaced before or any major issues. Yes, it is "easy" to just scroll online and see the many transmission failures for those two years compared to an 06. I feel as if maybe more care should be given to those model year transmissions. Maybe a transmission fluid change every 40,000 miles. I really believe going the 60,000 miles that I "THINK" Nissan recommended on the manuals book for the 6.0 gen was wrong.

But also remember, it's not EVERYONE with a 04-05 transmission that is having problems. Many of them are perfectly normal. It's just impossible to know the percentage. Majority of owners with that issue will post online and vent about the transmission problem to notify others. So "don't" let that seem as if the majority of 04-05's have that problem to you.

any insight on that issue.

The 4speed have little or no issues. Should you love the 6th that much, then go for the 4speed. They only come with some 04 SL.

I have a 2005 with 77k miles. No problems with the transmission, thought I have had 2 transmission fluid drain and fills completed. Only other problems I've had was the gas gauge that jumped, though $5 Lowes magnets took care of that. Though my car just developed the ABS issue that's been posted on here before, with it kicking in during normal braking. Requires a hub and ABS senor replaced on the passenger side. Though I did have problems with the factory brake rotors warping, Brembo rotors from Tirerack solved that issue. Other than those things it's been oil changes and a battery change and nothing else. Average 23mpg highway/suburban driving, with a best of 31 all highway on a trip.

Edit-bought it with 17k miles on it, and had no service history besides oil changes before I bought it.

I purschased my 05 brand new. At 69,000 the tranny went bad. The dealer replaced for free and only charged us the labor fees. Now, at 156,000 mles the tranny is shifting from 1st to 2nd then from 2nd back to 1st extremely hard. I sometimes feel as if a diesel has hit the car, or my tranny is going to fall out of the car. I am so disappointed. I have owned, 75 280z, 76 280z, 87 300z, all which were brought used and NEVER had these problems.

I have an 04 Maxima and its a piece of s--t! Absolutely the worst car I've ever owned! I bought the car in 2008 and so far I've had to replace the tranny's valve body, radiator, radiator fan assembly, altenator twice, power window motor, O2 sensor twice, valve cover gasket, 2 ignition coils, fan blower resistor, cd changer, tie rod, and last but not least the power steering hose.

Needless to say I will probaby never buy another Nissan.

I love my cvt in my '10 maxima. It takes some time getting use to but I love the smooth acceleration and no shift shock. I've had this car for 6 months but it learns your driving style.
