Maxima is hard to start sometimes, takes 3 tries

My wife's 05 3.5 SL has started giving her some starting problems recently. Starts in the morning from home and after she gets off work fine, but when she picks kids up from daycare it has recently taken her 3x's to get the car to finally start. Its got 98K miles so I am wondering if I should change the plugs, if its a sensor or what the deal is. Anyone else having these issues? praying to god it is not as bad as the valve body issue, geez!!

Check the battery ?

I'm on battery #4 on my '04SE. Not because they went dead, just starting to have starting issue randomly, usually after a heat-wave period (in CA). Like your case, it didn't do it all the time, just taking more-than-one-try from time to time. After every replacement, no issue afterward ... for a few years.
I changed out my plugs @115Kmiles and they still looked OK.

It is turning over fine, just taking at least 3 times to start. so i wondered about the pluggs, but from what i can tell they are a tough job to do. so thats why i was curious on a sensor or something.

Exactly my cases, turning over was fine but wouldn't start the 1st time. Didn't happen at every starts, usually later in the day (getting off work).
Battery replacement solved the problem everytime.
On the good side, I haven't needed a jump-start or stuck on the side of the road ---> it's a great "early-warning feature".

(My 2007Murano is currently on battery#3. The engine wouldn't turn, just a bunch of cracking sound --> road-side assistance needed. It has battery-rundown protection, but that doesn't help in this case)

You know i just read a similar post about the throttle body too, that has never been cleaned so I plan to do that soon. So far the car has not done it in a few days.

Ok will give that a shot if it happens again. I cleaned out the throttle body and it was very dirty as well as cleaned out the K&n I have in there as well. I also have ran a bottle of lucas fuel cleaner thru there as well.

I have an 04 3.5 SL and I'm having the same issue. Although it usually seems to happen after the car is at temperature. I have also been having trouble getting it in gear after starting it - both drive and reverse. I'm going to check the battery as others have suggested, but its only two years old. Earlier this week I replaced both cam shaft position sensors because last week it shut off in the middle of traffic. Anyone have any ideas?

Mine did the same thing. Clean the intake, just be gentle with the MAF.

So if its that sensor, could that cause it to shift odd as well? I have done the transmission fix described in the lengthy trend on the first page and its been fine other than sometimes its hard to start and it will just shift into 5th gear as well. The wife will cut the car off, start it back up and its fine.

After talking to some people at advance and a guy at dealer, they all said that if a sensor was bad it would throw a code. Then the guy at advance mentioned the neutral safety switch, but I can't find much on here about that. Anyone ever had to replace that?

I went with the sensors from advance auto (~130 bucks) and took me 30 or so mins start to finish to get them both in. drove car around for 30+ mins and as far as I can tell it has fixed the problem. Checked with my code reader when I got home and there are no codes currently in car....hoping that's the end of this saga.
