Ebay catalytic converter any good?
Ebay catalytic converter any good?
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Eastern-Cata...e38a4a&vxp=mtr
I found this on ebay for a very reasonable $190 compared to more than 1k the dealer wants. I have the dreaded p0420 and need to change the cat. Has anyone tried these and does it clear the code. I was going to do the spark plug anti fouler just to go through emissions but I worry about the effects of continuing to drive with a bad cat.

http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_odkw...erter&_sacat=0 I recommend going with a well known company for exhaust parts when it comes to catalytic converters. Magnaflow, Cattman, etc. This company you put up I am not familiar with. If you go too cheap, you might end up having to replace it sooner than you want again. This isn't an easy task to begin with, so doing it right and having it last a long time should be a consideration. In the link I provided, there are a couple Magnaflows that are a little less than 300 each. I would replace both if it where me just to have piece of mind, however if you only need one then you should be fine just replacing it.
the cats I believe he is looking at getting are not the ones you weld in. Don't be afraid of getting things off ebay. I have not had any issues with my purchases on ebay. Just make sure you know what you are getting. Make sure the seller has at least a 98 for score and has sold over 100 items. Magnaflow seems like the best option next to cattman, however cattman are pretty expensive.
I paid a little less than 600 for my Racingline high flow cats. Direct bolt on with no SES light. Gives it the perfect rumble. I also have the Racingline y-pipe to compliment the cats and it deletes the 3rd cat all together with no emissions problems. Also have a cheap eBay cat back which I've been very impressed with.

under hood noise,check engine light
My check engine light was on and noise under hood...diagnosis bad 02 sensor(bad 02 sensor code DO NOT mean sensor is bad) it means the air quality across the sensor is out of range. The problem was with the cat converter(cracked) my mechanic was able to take it off and weld it back together. Engine light off, no more noise everything fine. So before you spend lots of money on a new converter or new 02 sensors check this first. A good mechanic should be able to weld the converter back without buying a new one..... Hope this help
i "had" the p0420 code aswell, but my mechanic said my battery was the cause of a lot of my car problems, so he changed some wiring and now its gone just today, so i'll get back to you guys today to let you know if my mechanic didnt lie
My final verdict on the ebay catalytic converter:
I finally got around to buying one manufactured by eastern. It cost around $190 shipped. It has been about 150 miles now and the code went away and has not come back . I also went through emissions and passed. So my verdict thus far is that unless you have loads of money to spend and are not sure what to do with it (why would you be driving a Maxima in the first place), buy this and either put in yourself or have your local mechanic do it.
Notes for replacing the part:
After an enormous amount of frustration, cuts, and general loathing, I managed to get this thing done. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to do a write-up which is badly needed cause I could not find any type of direction on how to change this stupid cat.
1st of all, use a very generous amount of wd40 on all the bolts. I can't emphasize this enough, in fact drench all the bolts and let it sit overnight it will make things infinitely easier. Also make sure you disconnect the O2 sensor while the cat is still attached (use wd40 for at least a couple of hours here too)
2nd, space is at a premium and maneuvering in the engine bay can be quite frustrating so take a good look at where you are trying to reach and plan it out before digging in, you will avoid many cuts and bruises this way. I took out the intake pipe where it connects to the TB (throttle body) in order to reach the heat shield bolts and two of the top bolts that connects to the exhaust manifold. You might find a better way to do it, good luck with that.
Finally, have lots of patience. This was very frustrating, one of the bolts wouldn't come of until I let the wd40 sit overnight. The space is so tight in some areas but if you maneuver correctly, you can get to those top bolts. This is probably a job that will take about 4 hours if you do it correctly. Good luck to anyone that wants to attempt this and I hope this helps.

The one I used was an Eastern catalytic converter that I got from ebay. It has been over a thousand miles and no MIL light still. So I would recommend it, it's a lot cheaper than what the dealer wants and it has worked thus far.
