Replacing a single tire
Replacing a single tire
Hi Guys
My left driver side tire has a gash in it and the tire shop I went to told me that it is not replaceable. I was going to replace only that tire but have heard from people that you should never replace a single tire. It should be all four or at the least in pairs. The tires are Michelin Primacy MXM4 which will run about $230 installed for a SINGLE tire. They have about 20,000 miles on them. Can I get away with replacing only 1 tire? I am leaning towards getting a pair of cheap tires of same size and speed ($200+ for both tires) but then I will have different brands on the front and back. Any thoughts on this?

well after 20k miles they are probably close to being worn anyway?
no, don't replace only one.
You should buy four continental extremecontact DW from tirerack. best/cheapest summer tire I have found. They only last me 2 summers though... expensive in canada.
cheap tires on a maxima is retarded.
IMO the OEM tires suck too much to be on the max.

only time you should for sure not replace one is on the drive axles, if ones got lots of tread and ones nearly bald the spider gears on your diff will go nuts. on a non-drive axle it doesnt matter at all
just get the one new tire and put it on the rear
