Should be the same engine. The VQ35DE is considered one of the best engines out there. What caused the failure?

It is the same engine. The only issue with the engine is the timing chain tensioners. If you can find an engine with the tensioners already replaced, go with that one. The 04 had issues with the transmissions not the engines. I am at 100k and no issues with the engine next to tensioners and CSP sensors.

well.....it had over 200k on it then parked and sat for few months. It got to where it was using lot of oil and smoking (not awful, bud very noticable) and then it started ratteling extremly bad. Few days later we were on a road trip and in the middle of freakin nowhere.....KER PLOW!!!!!!!! There she blows!!!!! lol

i had a few people tell me that they changed something in 06 that fixed (the common trait of engine). i quickly found out theese engines are just as expensive as K series honda/acura engines, actually some higher.

will i need to switch anything else?

So if i get a 06 engine, will the ecu or any other sensor that anyone knows of have to be changed to an 06 year part?

You do not need new ECU. Keep the stock one.

it will be a direct swap if it is from a Maxima, Altima, and I think the Quest. To be clear, the engines are different from front wheel drive to rear wheel drive Nissans. There is a section that talks about the differences if you are up to reading it. They are minute, but important for fitment. The wiring harness, ecu, hookups will be the same. You are going to have to use parts from the current engine for the swap so we are clear. In order for everything to hook up right you will need some of the parts. When you pull the old one, don't get rid of it until you pull what you need obviously. Good luck. It will be worth it in the end. 200k miles is pretty damn good for an engine for sure.

I had the same problem, ive been driving with the tensioners being ****ed up and then one day turn on the car and BAM it starts knocking baddlllyyy ... Ive been driving with a bad front catalytic for about 3 years and burning oil but it wasnt clogged, so most likely my engine got fuked becasue of the tensioners beasue i never realized that Slight ticking noise was a big deal b.c it would just go away as i drove...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s94l3kS10fQ

thats the noise ^^

either way at this point i'm replacing the engine with a junkyard engine making sure the tensioners and water pump is good and i'm also buying a new catyltic converter... FML big job... either way good luck
