^^ I'm not a 6th gen expert, but I do know these things...

Most would recommend doing timing chain tensioners, pcv oil catch can, and doing a valve body upgrade so the tranny lasts.

You can do either, depending on what tools you have. I planned to do mine from the bottom, but eventually ended up doing it from the top.

change out your intake gaskets with these: http://www.nwpengineering.com/Phenol...rs.html#VQ35DE

change out your oil pump to one of these: http://www.z1auto.com/prodmore.asp?m...50z&prodid=920 or http://www.injectedperformance.com/n...for350zg35.htm

Also change these out:
Knock sensor
Spark plugs to NGK iridium plugs
Timing chain tensioners
Transmission mounts
Engine mounts (Recommend getting these as well: http://racinglineperformance.com/sho...p?IDProduct=19

These are the main things I would change out. There are many different performance mods you can do, that is another ball game though.

i got a 97 maxima also that im gunna "do up". I honestly think ima sell my Acurs Rsx Type-S and put all of wat i get out of it and build the hell out of the 97. only drawback is that ima have to do a manual trans swap. Ive never swapped an auto to a manual....i can only imagine how much of a damn job that is.

All good recommndations^
I'd also add a transmission cooler if you have the funds, to further prolong the life of fragile transmission our 6th gens have.
