06 Maxima Whining Sound

My 06 Maxima has developed a whining sound. It will rise and lower with RPM. Can't tell where in the engine the noise orginates. Has 109K.

thanks. :

Probably your timing chain tensioner shoe guides on top. They are nylon and have probably worn through. If it ticks or clatters, could also be the main timing chain guide has broken and is getting slapped by the timing chain. Need to replace all nylon guides & shoes, main and 2 secondary timing chains + water pump. Very common on this engine. Cost = ~ $1,200-$1,500.

Could be the alternator, mine did it right before it went out.

If it resembles handheld coffee grinder buzz, it's the chain tensioner. If it's high pitch squeal, it's something on the accessory belts: alternator, or PS pump, or AC compressor. You can remove belts one by one to see which one it is.

Thanks to all who gave me advise on the "whine". It was exactly as you all said the chain tensioner. Had it replaced along with a couple of other things and the Rocket is rolling again!

Great! Did you DIY or send her to a shop? How many hours of labor?

I had the work done at local shop. Quality work, really pleased with the results. Had the water pump, hoses, plugs, valve cover gasket and oil / filter changed / replaced. Not sure on hours. the total for all work / parts came to $2,000. Putting a new set of Michelin Sports on her next week. I may keep the "rocket" longer than I first anticipated.

Ouch! I was quoted $700 Canadian plus parts last fall and still procrastinating.
