2008 Throwing Camshaft Position Codes P0011 / P0022

My 2008 just hit 100K and recently started throwing camshaft position codes. The P0022 is typically pending and doesn't happen often but the P0011 usually registers a fault. Luckily no coffee grinder noise from the timing chain tensioner yet. I've already replaced the oil, unfortunately didn't fix it. Is there anything else I can try before taking it to a mechanic?

Time to replace the worn chain tensioners and while at it also replace the valve cover gaskets and clean the sending disks on the cams. This should clear those codes.

Was afraid that was the next step... Any idea what that job would roughly cost from a third party? Would do it myself if I had more time and space, I'm spoiled with my other vehicle being a '97 ZJ. Much easier to work under the hood.

Why tensioners? He said he wasn't symptomatic. How are valve cover gaskets related to camshaft sensors? What the hell are sending disks? These engines can go several hundred thousand miles before needing the kind of expensive work you're scaring him with.

NOTHING you suggested is even mentioned in the P0011 and P0021 Engine Control sections of the FSM.

OP, there are lots of things you can do before taking it to a mechanic. Things that are relatively easy if you have some basic mechanical skills. What are we to suggest without knowing anything about your history or capabilities? Those aren't hard codes to figure out. No need to run immediately to a mechanic with a $3500 dollar check to pull half the engine apart like some would suggest. These are old cars. Factory Service Manuals are free. Great place to start.

Thanks, I primarily posted this to see if there was a common fault that I could check myself, didn't think of going through the FSM myself. Looking through the DTC procedure in the book, I could at least perform the steps up until the camshaft / timing chain inspection (in order of component inspection, intake valve timing control solenoid, crankshaft position sensor, camshaft position sensor). Hardest part will just be getting the sensors/solenoids out, but I certainly have the means to bench test them. When the FSM calls for a 12 V DC source, how many amps? Would prefer not to cook the solenoid if it is indeed good.

These engines require timing chain tensioner and guide replacement after 100-140k miles. Do your homework before yelling in the forums.

Oil leaking onto the cam disks can throw the cam sensor off and cause out of time codes to be thrown. Do your homework before yelling in the forums.

And tone down your attitude.
