Hi everyone,
Ive got a 2006 Maxima that has 260k kms (160k miles). Car runs like a dream overall but it does ping a lot even though I run the highest grade of gas station petrol available here in Australia -98 octane (US 93 equivalent).
Has always been impeccably maintained and all servicing is up to date on the car such as fresh spark plugs, cleaned injectors, well serviced etc. However I can hear it always pinging when I apply light to medium thottle (15-40% throttle).
Has anybody else experienced this and know of a fix?
I am assuming that it is because of the high km the carbon build up on the pistons has increased the compression ratio and so causing this. But wanted to see if anybody else has any input or experience before I go dropping $ on fixing...

Yeah, I remember the heat shield giving me troubles on my 07...made some odd noises, and it's proximity made the sound impossible to understand or trace from the drivers seat, it just sounded like a real problem. Got that fixed noise was gone.
Maybe I'm not too sure about this, but I thought pinging could also be caused by a bad knock sensor. A failed knock sensor would normally not trigger off the check engine light, so I'd advise you scan the car to confirm this.
Nice one. thanks very much for that everyone. Will definitely investigate the heat shield and knock sensor.
On that note, what and where is this heat shield you are referring to?
It's been a while, but as l recall it's right under the car, middle of the car, above the exhaust. I can't remember if there was one near the exhaust manifold under the hood, but you gotta get the car on a set of ramps/jack stands or a lift, and just inspect the entire exhaust from engine to tailpipe essentially
Just for info, your car is more akin to the European Teana than the American Maxima. I believe your model series should be J31. It's A34 for the Maxima. Again, yours could either be a 2.0L/2.3L engine with the conventional auto transmission or a 3.5L with a CVT. What specs do you have?
so with my mechanic we investigated all of the possible causes we could see/test and everything was fine once again pointing to the carbon build up causing the pinging.
also when we hooked up a diagnostic tool to the car to observe live ignition timing it was during the point that the car delivers very high ignition advance at light engine loads that it was pinging.
So we got in and did a very thorough engine carbon clean and indeed the pinging has now gone.
Also the often sluggish and somewhat haphazard power delivery I was experiencing at low throttle applications has also now gone which means it was probably the knock sensor triggering an ignition retard when detecting the knock and affecting performance.
Win!

I just had one replaced in my 04.
The symptoms were as you described.
As an example...as the gears changed from first to second to third....once it goes into the final gear, the idling drops to a normal RPM.
it is then that symptoms similar to yours appear.
im thinking about adding some fuel stabilizer bc it sits a lot.

yeah i know what a faulty coilpack feels like. nothing like this.
also didn't ever speak about gears and idle rpm. You sure you on the right thread? (or meds?)
cheers
