2008 Maxima gets stuck on 3rd/4th gear / limp mode no codes!
Hi guys, long time lurker and have read 3/4 of Sticky Poll RE5F22A TRANSMISSION FIX and I'm about to change the stepper motor to see if it fixes anything.
So, bought the 2008 maxima 6 speed cvt about 5 months ago. The tranny supposedly has 20k miles on it, changed by the dealer.
Reason previous owner changed it was because car would get stuck on gear, same thing thats happening so far.
Problem is I accelerate and it would go to third gear and not shift up, if I manually shift to 4th it will also get stuck there so to drive it I have to manually down shift to 2nd gear until it has enough speed to shift to 5th and then 6th. sometimes 5th would take properly and sometimes it would feel like its in limp mode.
Things done to the car:
Changed manifold and all three cats. As per mechanic that said that was the problem, go figure.
All o2 sensor as it started giving codes P2A03 and P2A00. Changed 2 times as it kept giving same codes and still does. This tells me there has to be a leak somewhere that keeps triggering these.
Changed all sensors, Cam/crank/tranny
Changed tranny fluid drove an hour and changed it again to flush it out.
No codes what so ever as to why it wont shift right.
At this point my guess is it is the step motor which I already bought and looking for a place where I can install it as I just moved and don't have a garage anymore. Or it could be the valve body...
What do you guys think? Has anyone had any similar experience?
I wonder if there is enough fluid moving correctly in the CVT. There might be a restriction. Check the CVT's external filter (https://www.my4dsc.com/change-cvt-tr...7thgen-maxima/). If it looks original (old and crusty), then they might not have changed it when they installed the re-manufactured/used CVT. Correct pressure is key with our CVT.
). Make sure the screens are not all gummed up. If you have a blockage, then your cams are not going to operating correctly,m which means you cam sensors are sending incorrect info the ECU.
Thanks TDGrant, Just bought the filter and the gaskets for the VVT. will check them out saturday and post update.

I would also check the VVTs (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7iGXyA4BTpY). Make sure the screens are not all gummed up. If you have a blockage, then your cams are not going to operating correctly,m which means you cam sensors are sending incorrect info the ECU.
Also, keep in mind that when you change out the CVT filter you are going to be down CVT fluid. When I change my filter, it is roughly down about 1/2 a QT. So, you might want to pick some up to top the system off when you change the filter out.
in sport mode 1st and 2nd shift flawlessly, 3rd and 4th gear get stuck and wont go over 40 mph. If I down shift to 2nd and almost redline it and can shift to 5th/6th gear and then it will pick up on the highway.
No OBDII codes.

Reason: Adding pictures
Car looks great for an 08. My 07 is becoming a rust bucket...
If both CVTs did the same thing...then we must have a sensor/electrical issue.
The over 40 mph thing. I had an issue like that it had to do with the rear ABS. The sensors weer getting muck up reading because of contamination (salt/grime) in between the hub and the sensor. There were no ABS codes. Just could not get the car over 40mph because it was not getting an accurate reading from the ABS sensor, so she went into limp mode. The difference between you and me is that the car did in in the winter...and stuff was freezing up.
Those hubs are easy to pop off...especially with a hoist, so it might be worth taking a quick look to confirm that everything is fine.

Thanks TDGrant, I’ll add on a couple more pictures one I wash it. ordered all 4 ABS sensors last week so they should be arriving this Thursday. Looking also into the valve body and ready in my eBay cart just in case that doesn’t work.
