IPod Charged by Max

I have an 09 Max + Prem.

The manual says that when the IPod is attached to the Maxima's signal cable, the IPod will be charged by the car.

Upon attachment, the IPod issues a warning on it's screen that the IPOD is not being charged. In driving around for a few hours, it seems that the IPod is right: no charging.

Has anyone else seen this issue with their 09 Max?

I have the most recent version of the IPod Touch.

I have the Premium package which has the integrated IPod interface.

The cable came with the car and is located in the center storage/armrest area.

Page 4-73 of the instructions says that the IPod is charged when tethered to the 09 Max.

I am interested to know if other so-situated 09 Maxima owners can confirm my observations.

It will never fully charge from the 12V source; in order for the battery to come to full charge you need a wall-unit adapter

Perhaps I did not make myself clear.

I know how to charge an IPod.

When hooked up to to the audio system of a Premium model Max, the linkage also charges the IPod. So I am lead to believe.

However, in my Maxima, when the IPod is hooked up, the screen of the IPod has a message that tells me that the IPod is not being charged.

The purpose of this thread to to tap into the knowledge base of other 09 Maxima owners who also use an IPod. I'd like to know what is their experience.

I believe those cables only allow for access/use through the navi/screen system, but to actually charge it you need the car adapter, best thing is, my IPod charges even while the car is off, I hope this answers your question, if not then I'm sorry...

Thanks guys, I get it now.

I did not look at the other thread as it referred to the IPhone; I have an IPod Touch. In that thread, the charging issue was raised and a workaround offered.

So it seem.....Nissan is one or two s/w revs behind Apple.

Like was said in the other thread. Apple changed the specs and made ALOT of aftermarket stuff "broken". Don't blame Nissan.

It has nothing to do with software its a hardware issue. Apple changed the charging from firewire to USB and most of the manufacturers already had in place firewire solutions. You probably wont see an actual solution until the next round if at all. THis is just because the majority of Ipods out there are the older versions not the new ones.

Iphone and IPOD TOuch share the same charging connections, so you will need an adapter to change 4th Gen IPODS, IPOD TOuch and the IPHONE 3Gs.

Oops! I'm back to being confused.

I have a brand new IPod Touch. My 09 Maxima is brand new. The tether cable in the Max hooked up to the IPod perfectly. I can use the on-screen management system to control the IPod.

What I cannot do and what is expressly called out in the manual, is the ability to charge the IPod when hooked up the the 09 Max.

I can understand issues with older IPods. This is not the case here.

CT Maxima,
Bottom line is your going to have to buy the adapter in order for your ipod to charge! I am not sure why or where you got confused.......I have a new IPHONE 3G the MAX could do everything but charge it, because of the change IPOD made to their newer products. So I bought a $20.00 adapter and no more problems.....pretty simple: Buy adapter Ipod Touch Charges! No adapter no charge.....dead Ipod Touch!

Questions???

Thanks. Less confused now that I am back from Nissan for another issue.

There is a TSB dated 1/9/2009 numbered NTB09-003 which speaks directly about this problem.

Most Apple devices will be charged with the Maxima. The ones that are not are the IPhone 3G, IPod Nano 4th Gen., and the Ipod Touch 2nd generation.

As you have noted, the workaround is an adapter. In the TSB, Nissan lists 3 possible vendors for this adapter.

a lot of times those connectors are real flaky as far as charging is concerned. Sometimes they charge and sometimes they dont

Well glad to hear you got things cleared up for you. BTW as others have said the actual interface will work, its the charging interface that was changed from firewire (older IPODS\Iphone) to USB (IPOD Nano 4th Gen, Iphone 3G, Ipod TOuch 2G). Apple did this really without letting anyone know in advance, so all the current interfaces have Firewire charging interfaces for the older products. The charging method was the only thing that was changed, not the actual interface (control\display).

As for an adapter you can check out the other Iphone thread as there are a few links in there. I know Apple is selling one direct from the store now to make it "eaiser" for you.

If you want to blame someone blame Apple as they were the ones who changed things up late in the game and didnt tell anyone untill it was "too late". Thats why we are "just" seeing these adapters out now.

There is an official TSB released on this issue from Nissan-NTB09-003. It basically says what has already been said in this thread though, just thought I'd share...

my new nano not only does not charge, but it does not interface at all! It just plays the playlist last selected when I plugged it in. No controls or anything work! Is this a cabling issue? should I just try the apple cord instead?

My Ipod charges but doesn't always Power off

Hi, I read through the postings on Ipod on the 09 Maxima and haven’t found an answer to the following. I hope someone can help. This problem is slightly different from what is reported here where the Ipod doesn’t charge and indicates that with a message. I don’t believe this problem is related to Apple’s change of the charging system in Iphone etc, so I’m guessing that the suggested adapter will not work. In my case my Ipod does charge, but sometimes doesn’t shut off, resulting in a discharged (ipod) battery. See below for details. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have the 09 maxima SV + Premium with the Ipod interface. Initially it seemed that the ipod wasn’t being charged – closer inspection reveals the following.

1. The car does charge the ipod.
2. The Ipod should power off two minutes after turning off the car.
3. When the car is turned off the Ipod is sometimes left in a state where it doesn’t power off – hence the sometimes discharged battery
4. Once (2) happens, the ipod will remain on even if disconnected from the cable
5. (2) doesn’t always happen – hence hard to notice. I’ve tried different power off scenarios (pausing play, before turn off etc,) with no luck.
6. My solution for now is to turn off car, and then hit play and pause in succession on the Ipod. It always shuts off after that.
7. Reading about the Ipod pinouts, Pin 21 determines what happens after the power is removed – depending on what resistance is connected. Apparently a 1 Mohm resistor is needed here to cause a shut down after power is removed. The car may not have it. See below for Pin 21 desscription.
Pin 21. Different resistances indicate accessory type:
1kOhm - iPod docking station, beeps when connected
10kOhm - Takes some iPods into photo import mode
500kOhm - related to serial communication / used to enable serial communications Used in Dension Ice Link Plus car interface
1MOhm - Belkin auto adaptor, iPod shuts down automatically when power disconnected Connecting pin 21 to ground with a 1MOhm resistor does stop the ipod when power (i.e. Firewire-12V) is cut. Looks to be that when this pin is grounded it closes a switch so that on loss of power the Ipod shuts off. Dock has the same Resister.

Those are my findings so far, but I’m really hoping that someone has solved this problem. It’s annoying to have to cycle the Ipod manually after switch off – on such an otherwise well designed car. I suppose I could build a male/female adapter with the 1Mohm resistor in place. That would only work if there isn’t already one of the other lower resistances in place on that pin.

Any thoughts?

Regards,

Does your ipod consistently power of when you turn off the ignition?

Same problem with the Ipod touch and 09 Maxima

My Ipod does not connect with the hookup in the Maxima. I ordered an adapter.

These forums provide great information. Rest assured, if there's an issue with your 09 Max, it's been covered on the discussion listings somewhere. People need to open their eyes and look a little.

This topic was covered a looooong time ago.

The product page does not state that it will work with the iphone 4 and above, only the Iphone 3GS and below.

I have two of these adapters one for my Max and one for the wife's Murano and both charge perfectly. The only thing I don't like is that they don't snap the connection very well so if it shifts in the glove box it may disconnect. But they work on my iPhone 4.

You will need a 12v to 5v converter.

Alpine had one, I've used it for my other car. There are others, I used one from Scosche but it was terrible. It introduced noise into the system and would not lock in place. The Alpine adapter is a high quality piece with non of those issues. Look around on eBay....that's where I bought mine for around $37.
