Help! I'm new here and have a question....
Here is what I think is going on since I DO have the Nav package ... you can only use 'Call home' (or the like) if you do NOT have the Nav ... with the Nav, it looks like you need to say 'Vehicle Phonebook' first and then go from there! Strange, but that's the only way it will work! Seems easier for NON-Nav people!
Ipod menu not coming up??
I've used my Ipod a bunch of times with my 2009 Maxima without fail. Today it seems to be having issues though and I'm hoping it's just me. The Ipod was plugged in from being used yesterday when I turned the car on and the FM radio was on. So I changed it to the Ipod, where it showed the Ipod menu title but nothing else. The Ipod says "OK to disconnect". When I disconnect it the car says "No Ipod is connected" so I connect it back up and that goes away, telling me the car is recognizing the Ipod, but I cannot get the car to bring up the Ipod menu and play the device. Any help is greatly appreciated!
Re: Active Head Rest
Warning for people who have 09 or 10 maxima. I put a new rear facing car seat in the new max. It broke the head rest. I have to replace the entire passenger seat just for the head rest. If you are going to put a rear facing car seat, put it in the middle.

Definitely good info - I'm just getting ready to install my son's car seat!
Oddly, I took it out of the car and into work and then listened to it via the headphones. Later took it back out to the car and it worked just fine. It's a 4th gen and I guess they don't turn off correctly either, so I'll just have to pony up for a newer ipod. If I get jammed up again with this one I'll try what you did though, thanks!
Hello everyone,
Firstly thanks for the people running the site! Great resource for asking questions about my Maxima.
I have a strange question, I bought my Maxima in June and hadn't used the Music Box much until last week. I have started recording some of my old CD's but have found when I use the Music Box I cannot switch between other CD's / Artists unless the car isn't moving?! The first 4 options on the list are avaliable but the others further down are greyed out unless I am stationary.
Does anyone else have the same problem? It makes the Music Box virtually unusable on a long freeway journey if you can't change the artist!!!

There is another good way of getting around your issue, HOWEVER,
Here is a little hint. The next time you are in the car and have this issue, rotate the tune/folder ****, this should get you different playlists or artists or albums. Whichever mode you are in at the time.

The **** 09Maxima_Sam mentions has been a real blessing for my wife and I. We are almost always in the car together, and the grayed-out functions were preventing whichever of us was not driving from operating useful options of the audio system. But that magic **** took the handcuffs off!
Nissan did this, because you may play with your musicbox or navigation system while driving, and they don't want to get sued if your in an accident caused by playing with these devices. You will notice this happens to many of the features of the system when the car is in motion. There is an aftermarket fix for this but involves taken your NAV system apart and modifying it.

I haven't seen a thread on here about this (even after a search), I have the XM Traffic info within my navvy. What do people think of it? I have an issue with the accuracy of the data, so often (like last night) it will tell me the freeway is clear (green line) and when I actually drive on it it's at a standstill.
Living in L.A. if this was accurate it would be a God send, at the moment though it's pretty useless.
My iPhone has the sigalert website on it and is far more accurate. Just a pain to look at whilst driving!!

2009 Maxima: Vibration/Buzz at Low RPM when Gently Accelerating
New Maxima 2009 owner (new to Nissan in general). My car when driving under conditions (like non-busy side roads with speed limit of 30-40 mph) where the car shifts in OD (6th gear) and then if I accelerate gently I can a feel a high frequency vibration/buzz in the steering wheel and through my foot on the gas pedal. I do not get this if I accelerate fast (the downshift raise the rpm and the buzz is then not there).
The dealer said they test drove it and they did not find anything not normal. But the dealer is in Manhattan where a test drive to simulate the conditions I described is pretty much impossible (stop and go type driving).
Is this normal for Nissan Maxima? If not, any ideas what may be causing this? Note: no vibration at high speeds / high RPMs.
Thanks
Sam

Sam999 - We need more info. You speak of 6th gear. I assume you must be using the paddles or manual option, since there are no real gears with a CVT. I have never noticed the vibration you mentioned, but then I am usually in Drive ('D'), which is the most efficient option.
There is supposed to be a very brief (just a few seconds) of rattle or vibration you can hear or feel at around 17 MPH when coasting or moving up gently from the car having been parked, but your situation soulds different. How long does your 'buzz' last?

K&N Typhoon air filter comments
I'm a new member having just bought a Maxima 2009 SV. I just bought a K&N typhoon air filter and would like comments from others that have installed one.
My biggest concern is how much louder is it than the stock air box since the car is driven by my wife and she just wants a good car to get to work. K&N guarantees the NISSAN warranty will not be impacted. Did anyone have problems with their dealer.
Finally, how much quicker is the car from 0-60, and what impact on gas mileage was observed?
A final question on HID fog lights. Which ones should I buy and are they worth the money over the stock halogen fog lights?
Thanks!

External Drive through USB question
Hey guys,
Wondering how to or if its possible to play mp3's off an external drive through the usb port in the console? I just picked up an external 640gb and reformatted it and when plugging it in, it give me the "no memory or ipod" prompt. I can get it to play of a thumb drive but not this drive for some reason. The drive was NTFS and that didn't work so I tried the only other option which is exFAT which I have never seen. Tried that and still nothing.
Any ideas or help would be great.

09Maxima_Sam, what is that little 'door' below the red circle in your picture? I just got a 2010 Maxima SV Premium and don't have that there.

Help me out guys...(again)
Hopefully someone can answer this question. Last month I leased an 09 (Sport Package) for 359 a month. I just received a call stating that I can no longer keep it, but instead turn in in for a 2010 (Sport package...same model). Apparently they messed up on the financial calculations and said I was not approved at the rate they thought I would get. Does this sound right? Its been such a pain in the *** getting the car I like now I have to trade it in. Would I be able to keep the 09 if I wanted?

Stereo on with out engine on
Need help. Wife is sitting infront of class waiting and want to listen to the stereo with out have the engine on. I have tried every combonation while searching and have come up empty. Gonna have to check the manuel when she gets home but for now, how is it done?
Just hit the start but for the ac power without the brake pedal pushed. This will give you the ac power without the start up.
Also have to have the key on you.

This happens in auto transmission mode. I only really guessed that it is in 6th. The vibration goes away if I accelerate fast enough to couse a down shift or if I keep the same speed but shift to semi-manual and keep the car at RPM higher than 1500. It seems to be triggered by RPM more than speed. The vibration would remain until driving conditions cause the RPM to go past 1500.
I am still a little confused (I am old). We have 'D', which is 'Drive', we have 'Ds' which is 'Drive - Sport mode', and we have a system where we can make the tranny act like a manual by shifting it ourselves via either moving the console tranny shift handle to the left side of the shift gate and 'bumping' it up or down, or by bumping the paddles on the steering volumn up or down.
In the 'D' and 'Ds' modes, there is no shifting as such, and the tranny can operate the CVT in a way that gives endless RPM variations, based on the firmness with which you mash the accelerator pedal, but these are in no way tied to any actual gear. In the manual mode, the tranny moves the RPMs up or down based on the number of times you bump the gear shift lever.
From your description, I think when you say 'in the auto transmission mode', you must be talking about the 'D' option.
My suggestion: Next time this happens, do nothing. Do not accelerate fast enough to do a downshift, do not shift to semi-manual, etc. If this sound happens between 14 MPH and 22 MPH, but goes away within 6 seconds with no action on your part, this is normal. If it is happening at a totally different speed, or keeps going longer than six to eight seconds, your dealer needs to look at this more closely.

Is anybody having any luck on the 2010 using the usb port and a flash thumb drive for music? I've tried the thumb drive and it seems to work the 1st time I plug it in and then if I add any new music to it, it will no longer read the drive. Says check ipod of memory or no memory found. I've tried 2 now and also an external hd that is in the exfat format. Will not read exfat at all.
Just interested if its just my reader in the car or a well known issue?
Well this gets more and more frustrating. This sound system that is. Now after kind of giving up on the usb mode for music, I then thought I'd just burn mp3 that are in folders listed as 2002 - 2010. Burned the disc and then put it in the car. Well started right up but noticed it selected 2008 folder and started to play. No problem, hit menu and then select folders. Only the 2008 shows up? I then took it out and put it back in the computer to check it out. Yep, everything is there. 2002-2010 folders. I don't get it. Only selects one of the many folders and only the 2008 shows up each time. This blows! The 9 gb or so on the nav system is not going to be enough and didn't really want to have to have my Clip hook up via the aux jack to be able to listen to my mp3 selections. I'll try different media types but right now everything I try is swinging and missing!
Next edit / update:
Just thought I'd update this in case its helpful to anybody else. Turns out if you burn to disc multiple folders, the folders themselves all have to be in a single folder. The system will then read all folders within. For example: My Mp3s and inside that folder, folders with 2010,2009,2009 ect.

Sorry for the confusion. Yes it happens in D and Ds (although I use D almost all the time). It has happened when the speed was just under 40 mph (and the RPM below 1500, around 1300). I believe it lasted more than 8 seconds. But I will keep a closer look paying attention to what you said.
If you are thinbking of getting one think twice. Maybe some cars suffer less than others. Maybe some people are less sensitive to it (bothers them less), etc. As I said, for me, had I known, it would have been a deal breaker although I like everythging else about the car.
Another note: This is not high speed vibration caused by road or wheels, it is not the "breaking" thing I read about. For better descriptions look for the thread in here called "vibration at 50 mph". Of course that thread has some people posting totally different issues like vibrations at 80 mph caused by misaligned wheels, etc. Look for the posts that describe the vibration at low low (40-50 mph).
If you still want a Maxima insist on a lengthy test drive and check for driving conditions that cause this (better described in the thread I mentioned).
Jiust an update. Took my car in for scheduled service and asked them to look into this vibration. The result is they say this is normal. I am starting to believe them as when I spoke to a friend who's daughter has a 2009 Maxima he said he knew exactly what I was talking about. I just wish the professional reviews had mentioned this. It would definitely had made me walk away from the Nissan. Note: I did not notice it during the always too short test drive.
