Help! I'm new here and have a question....
'Nothing they can do?' I would have suggested to them that you bought their flagship in good faith, that this is a new car, and either they fix this problem under warranty, or you want an '09 Maxima from them that is trouble-free. If they even hesitated before answering, I would be on the phone to Nissan, telling them their dealer could/would not fix the problem, and you would like to invoke the lemon law. If you still got no help after three trips to the dealer, file the lemon law papers and get a car you can trust.
Boy, am I glad I don't have to deal with that dealer! If I brought this problem to my dealer, he would tighten the cap, reset the code (check engine light), and tell me to bring it back if the light comes on again. If it came on again, he would replace the gas tank cap without even asking, and reset the light again. If that didn't work, he would have his service techs go over the entire system until they found the problem. And he would be apologizing all the way. Charges? All charged to Nissan.
There is NO WAY you should be having to endure this total lack of service.

So guess I'll be getting help after all, but what frustration for such a cheap part. I'm going to have a discussion with the service manager when I go in explaining just how disappointed I am with their total lack of service and commitment to me (the customer) and remind them that there is another Nissan dealer/service shop less than 10 miles away. I'm still shocked at how big of a deal this has become.
Whats going on everyone... So I just purchased my HIDS 3000k Yellow for my fog lights now I looked all over an couldnt find the How to (Install Fog Lights) on the 09 Maxima... I msg the moderator see if he has it he told me take alot of pictures and write one up. Hes hysterical let me tell you not being sarcastic know one has every told me to do such a thing but I thought it was funny. I was hoping hat someone already has that done an I wont be doing this blind... i.e not knowing what to do and taking it as it comes... I guess what I am asking is hook me up with some info... Thanks....

You are pretty much stuck with driving with the steering wheel on your knees. Lower the driver's seat as far as possible, and spread your knees apart. You may not see as well, but this will give you some 'kneeway'. Have you tried lifting the wheel fairly firmly as you press the 'up' switch on the steering column? I remember one other poster who has this problem, and that was last winter. As I seem to recall, a bolt was loose in the inner workings of the steering column, which allowed gears to get so far apart they lost contact with each other. The good thing is this is definitely a warranty situation.

Today I ran over a branch in the middle of the road that did not sound good as it passed through. I now notice a rougher acceleration from a stop. I looked under my car and noticed that the muffler has 3 small symetrical holes. Was this there before i ran over the branch? Can someone check there's to see if they have the same thing? thanks
How does XM Traffic work???
We finally activated the free 3 month XM Radio service but have no clue how to start/evoke XM traffic. We live in Chicagoland and are always displaying the GPS but see no difference within the screen. Did I not activate it correctly? What am I suppose to see that's different or is XM traffic just an all day traffic channel? Thanks

Check your Nav settings and the Nav manual. It has to be turned on in the settings menu. I got it with my 3 month trial, but I live in an area with no traffic info, but my nav did acknowledge I had the service at the time.
Gas Cap Update
Since I'm still new apparently I can't yet start a new topic, so I'm going to hijack and if someone wants to move this out then great.
Here's my situation:
1. Check engine light at 800 miles - dealership says general emissions code, nothing they can do.
2. Check engine light at 2000 miles - dealer says gap cap loose.
3. Check engine light at 2200 miles (2 days after the last shop visit). I fill up, drive 150 miles on the interstate, stop to eat, pull out and 5 minutes later, light is on. Go to dealer Monday and they say, gas cap loose again. Since they can't make the gas cap come loose in the shop, they cannot verify faulty part and therefore no warranty coverage.
4. Call Nissan to complain, talk to regional rep (WI), she says same thing. I ask for options, she says unless the dealership can verify somehow, Nissan won't cover.
So, I'm stuck with a gas cap that keeps coming loose, a dealership that can't come up with a way to verify it in the shop, and Nissan not caring.
What should I do, I'm tired of the Check engine light coming on and no longer trust it!

1. They had me put the cap on showing them how I'd been doing it, which consisted of putting pressure on the cap thinking it'd help ensure it was tight. They also had me do it like I would normally of, which was just inserting it and turning it one click. Both ways had the cap end up loose sometimes and tight sometimes.
2. They explained how the rubber seal in the cap was likely causing the problems as it wasn't functioning correctly depending on the pressure put on to the cap. Basically it was causing the cap not to thread into the filler tube properly.
3. They replaced the gas cap and filler tube and took them for their engineers to work with.
4. According to the dealership, they also checked on the Maximas on the lot and found 4 more with the same issue, which they will be addressing next week.
So, if you are having issues with your gas cap staying tight, it probably isn't just you!
Unfortunately my dealership still feels they did absolutely nothing wrong, which disappoints me to no end. I have another dealership close that I'll have to consider now, I guess.
Someone should do a "quirky/cool hidden features about the maxima" thread. For instance, I just realized that if you press down the toggle switch on the right side of the steering wheel the horn beeps!
So I finally installed the 3000k HIDS into the fogs... Looks pretty crazy... Althought I noticed that last night my left fog was out. I was kinda upset but this is my life an **** like this happens lol... Well the situation is when I turned my car back on the light was on!!!??? I was dumbfounded. Didnt know what to expect or what not. So I called my installer and asked him what the problem was. He said you might need a relay??? Now I called my boy whom I trust an he stated you dont need any relays for fogs. I dont know. Now I come on the fourm an I ask you all... Do I or dont I need a relay for my foglights. Thanks...
The 'not to drive for a long period of time' is actually saying not to drive for an extended period AT THE EXACT SAME SPEED until after the car is broken in. I'm sure the speed of the car varied a bit (probably a lot) while being moved from dealer to dealer. The distance the car was moved does not enter into this situation. You have done nothing wrong here.
My car was also moved from another dealer, but was moved on the back of a flatbed truck my dealer owns. It would not have bothered me had it been driven between dealers.
As to the 4K limit Nissan recommends for the first 1200 miles, that is a very good rule to follow. But we have had lamebrains here on the ORG doing elapsed time trials and discussing redlining within the first 300 miles. Just try to stay below 4K the rest of the way to 1200, and I'm sure you will be absolutely fine.

Well, I am nearing the 1200 mark and have hit over 4k exactly 2 times thus far (accidently while passing, no full throttle). I read your post about gradually pushing it up to full throttle/redline earlier in the thread, and I really want my car to have the same life as you have seen in yours. Did I already blow it by revving agressively a couple times or is there something I can do to somewhat 'make up' for that? What exacly goes wrong when its revved? Probably 75%+ of the time, I have kept it under 3k with a light throttle.

You are fine. Nissan feels it is better to wait until all the engine parts have completely meshed/fitted together (in other words, the engine is 'broken in') before putting maximum pressure on the engine parts. They feel doing that increases the chances the engine could have a long, trouble-free life.
But there are many right here on the ORG who are not as careful as you. We have had folks here on the ORG actually redline their cars before getting anywhere near 1K on the odo. Some have even done elapsed quarter mile wide open throttle runs before the end of the breakin period. As careful as I try to be, I had my RPMs briefly get around 5K (like with you, it happened as I was passing) a time or two before full breakin, and I'm not the least bit worried about that.
I can assure you your engine already loves the way you have been pampering it, and will be more than ready to give you excellent service when the time comes. And it sounds like that time may be at hand.
As for doing something to 'make up' for those very minor 'indescretions', I could suggest that you continue your careful breakin by maybe trying to keep the RPMs below 5K for another few hundred miles, then below 5.5K for a few hundred miles after that. I usually try to make it to around 2.5K miles before doing really serious accelleration. Such care may be overkill, but I just like to give the car the best chance possible.
OK, so somehow Nissan quality got a hold of my call with the regional rep and decided to do something about it. They contacted me late last week and said to bring it back into the dealer for a replacement and that the parts would be sent to Nissan quality for a review. Took it in yesterday and there were 4 Nissan engineers there to actually participate in the service and talk with me about the situation. Here are some highlights:
1. They had me put the cap on showing them how I'd been doing it, which consisted of putting pressure on the cap thinking it'd help ensure it was tight. They also had me do it like I would normally of, which was just inserting it and turning it one click. Both ways had the cap end up loose sometimes and tight sometimes.

great advice thanks. I assumed it would be ok because the amount of time spent accelerating vs the total break in period would come to way under 1%. Its such a great car so far. I used to drive a 200hp 97 TL (2 cars ago) and always dreamed it had 50-100 more hp and that is the maxima. same weight, size, but more power.
Did you just go by the normal 3700 mile first oil change recommendation? I think am going to trust Nissan on this issue. Also, is there a mpg improvement at some point during break in? (if you can't tell, this is my first new car)
Yes, I just use Nissan's 3750 mile interval for oil changes. If I ever switch to synthetic oil, I will probably change to a larger oil change interval - maybe somewhere around 5K to 7.5 K.
I have not noticed a significant change in MPG over the first 5K, but then I never checked it the first 2K, because I knew the initial MPG on vehicles often changes after a few K. Several posters here have found the MPG improved slightly over time. By far, the most important factors in MPG are the way one drives, and the type driving being done. This is a 3600 pound car with 290 HP, so it uses a lot of gas in stop and go driving, with some here getting as low as 15 MPG in pure city driving.
But, once moving on the open road, this car gets very good MPG. Several posters hers have gotten as high as 30 to 32 MPG on open, level freeway trips. With the up-and-down roadway and heavy traffic of freeways in my area, I am getting around 28 to 29 on the interstates. Great for a car this size with this power.

Yep, this is the same thing that happen to me. I was lucky my steering wheel did not adjust all the way down, so it was no problem driving. They replaced my whole steering wheel column to repair this, I imagine they will have to do the same for you..
wassup fellas
i'm fairly new to the forum...i've actually been reading a lot of posts for a while w/o posting myself. my family has an 09 and yesterday i drove it to work and after getting off i came out to crank it and it took longer than usual to start up. I turned it off and restarted it and it didn't do it the second go round. I didn't think anything of it but to make an appt w/ the dealership. well today while driving home from work my said the check engine oil light or maintenance engine oil light popped on and she was definitely pissed need I not say why. Last week the dealership did an oil change and we're wondering if it's something that they done because it has NEVER acted this way until after the oil change. If it's something major wrong with the car we will make a big fuss about getting a replacement for it. I don't know how much it would help but she doesn't like the idea of paying for something and it doesn't run properly. thanks fellas for any input.

Your story sounds a lot like mine. Did an oil change last week, and today the light came on. Haven't been able to make it go away. Will have to take it to dealer I guess. But this really sucks, 4600 miles is too soon for this happen. You ever figure out what caused your light to turn on?
hey guys,
This is my first post and I was planning to buy the 2010 Maxima soon. I decided to get the 2010 Maxima SV with SP, but then today I saw on Nissan's website that they are offering 0.0% APR for the 2009 Maximas. I'm wondering what is the difference between the 2009 and the 2010 Maxima, is the extra money and interest worth it for the 2010 Maxima?

I'm surprised nobody has responded to your question yet. That is probably because the differences between the '09 and '10 are still not all that clear to some of us.
What IS VERY clear is that the ONLY external difference is the '10 wheels are supposed to be a tad more silvery. But even that was not very noticable when I compared the '10 wheels with the '09 wheels at my dealer.
We also know the engine and tranny are exactly the same, and nothing has changed in HP or torque or in any vehicle dimension.
There is supposed to be a change of sorts in the audio/tech area, but I'm not into that area. The things I use (radio, CD player, Music Box hard drive, etc) are unchanged. I will let one of the techno geeks here try to explain the difference in that area.
The '09 Owner's Manual says premium fuel is required, but the '10 Owner's Manual says premium is strongly recommended, but that regular gas can be used, resulting in reduced performance. There has been discussion here about whether there was any real change in that area between the '09 and '10, and whether the '09 could also use regular (which would result in reduced performance). That may well be the case.
in a nutshell, unless you happen to have an interest in that mysterious techno change in the media area, the '10 Maxima is pretty much a carbon copy of the '09.

For the body style being this new, I would say there is no way there will be much of a difference. Besides, know that all the 09s have not been sold and this being a new body style, there would be very little difference in the 2010. So, if the 09 is giving you a great deal for all the options you want, GO GET IT!
Who can tell it is a 09 or 10? You would still be first owner and great deal with great payments.
And remember when any new car is released, the people that buy it in the first 3 to 6 months, pay the highest. If you want that, go ahead. But if cost is important to you, for same car, just different year, then go with the 09 with the great deal.
Men, if you can save like 4k or more, don't even think twice, except you do have a lot of money to spare.
I went to the dealership today, and they offered me 26k before taxes for the 09 Maxima S with 0% APR. Originally, I wanted the SV with Sports Package, but it was a little too expensive for me, so I decided to stay with S. Is 26k a good price?
Well put it this way I got my SV-Sport for 31K so in that sense if your just getting a base S model w/ nothing in it I would just throw in the extra few dollars or at least get an SV. A lot of the stuff you just don't need anyways and you can get away with putting after-market stuff in cheaper.
Just picked up an '10 and found this forum. Trying to get to 15 posts, and had a question.
Anyone know if an '10 Premium + Tech has the ability to fold down the rear seat? Mine has a rear center console and the trunk pass through. The manual is not very clear on this.
The place where there should be a button to release the passenger seat is just an empty hole. The strap to release the driver seat is missing also.

Just guessing, but the '10 is most likely the same as the '09 in this area.
In the '09, the 'S' and 'SV' have the 40/60 fold-down rear seats. BUT, adding either the Sport or Premium packages replaces the bodyframe part between the back seat and the trunk compartment with a more solid, rigid frame for much greater body stability. That rigid frame leaves the small opening behind the fold-down rear seat console as the only passageway between the cabin and the trunk.

Hey all,
Just took stock of a '09 Maxima 3.5SV last week. Came with Premium and Tech package. Love the car! I do have a question and I can't seem to find an answer. I've been told you can play video files via the CF slot. I heard that they are PSP files, but I'm not sure. Anyone know if this is true and how you do it. I can make PSP files with DVDFAB5.

Thanks for any help you can give,

Hello, I have a 2009 SV w/Sport package. I was wondering, if I tried to remove the upright part of the back seat, are you saying that the opening would still be the same size as if the seat was in place and just had the ski pass through hole still? That would mean that behind the back seat there is a solid piece of metal with only a small hole cut into it for the ski pass through, is that right? I would rather not take the back seat apart if it really is not going to help me.

Sorry, I should have quoted above earlier so that this question makes sense:

Just picked up an '10 and found this forum. Trying to get to 15 posts, and had a question.
Anyone know if an '10 Premium + Tech has the ability to fold down the rear seat? Mine has a rear center console and the trunk pass through. The manual is not very clear on this.
The place where there should be a button to release the passenger seat is just an empty hole. The strap to release the driver seat is missing also.

I had a similar question, but I have a 2009 w/sport package. It seems pretty stupid to limit the ability to put the seats all the way down. But I am trying to find out here if there is a way to do it by removing some bolts or something. Then we can use the great trunk space to its full potential!

Does the body frame part between the back seat and the trunk compartment that you are referring to take up more space in that area than the normal frame found in the S and SV?
It definitely takes up more space (has less openings), and that extra metal is the reason the '09s with Sport and Premium packages have a considerably more rigid body. I have not seen this part of the body frame, as it is completely out of sight. It may have openings, but will surely not have the big opening we find in the corresponding frames in the base S and SV without Sport or Premium.
I would guess this frame may have something like an 'X' shaped piece of metal from corner to corner across the frame behind each rear seat. I have no idea whether that additional part of the serengthened frame is bolted to the base frame, or welded to it, or maybe the frame is one piece, made with a different die than the frame on the base S and SV.
If I was determined to see exactly what the reinforced frame looked like, I would probably try to open up the front liner in the trunk, rather than removing the back of the rear seats. But then I'm not sure which way would be easier.
problem with acceleration, maxima 2009
Hello
Can you help me with this problem. My maxima 09 accelerate with no problem to 130 m/h, but after that car continue to accelerate terribly slow.
If someone is familiar with this problem.
Is electronic limitation on my maxima
Thank you very much

You forgot to mention that you were doing this speed testing at the track. The mods here (as well as many posters) take a VERY dim view of fools driving at triple digits on public highways.
What you are calling a 'problem' is not a 'problem', but common sense reality.
Most cars do have some type of speed limitation in what is usually a failed attempt to prevent total nut cases from killing themselves and everyone around them. That means the Maxima is like most cars, in that it would require computer software modification in order to be used at the track.
The most common MPH computer cutoffs are around 130 MPH or 140 MPH. I have heard the '09 Maxima cutoff is at 132 MPH, but I can't verify that. That would make sense, as the CVT is designed for maximum efficiency, not maximum speed. Whatever the computer limit might be, that won't be a limitation for me, as I never take my Maxima to the track.
