Synthetic Oil
Got my first oil change yesterday and I asked them about the ester oil. They said they will continue to use it until they hear otherwise from Nissan. Being that the first oil change was complimentary I didn't even ask about the price.
I got to say as much as I love my maxima, I have serious concerns about nissan. I have read nothing but horror stories on this board about their horrible service and tactics towards customers. As it is this warranty is only going to last my 18 months anyway as I drive 24k a year sounds like that wont matter much.
The whole ester oil heartache makes me sad. In my mind, there is no way Nissan can justify creating a situation where loyal customers can be charged a HUNDRED BUCKS for an oil change. If Nissan fouled up and built an engine that cannot use any normal oil, then they should cover costs of oil changes above what is normally charged. If the engine CAN use normal oil, then this ester charade should never have happened.
I know I will NOT be paying a hundred bucks for an oil change, and I absolutely WILL take Nissan to court if they say my engine failed because my dealer has been using dino oil at oil change times. I have used dino oil for sixty years, and it has never been a problem in any vehicle I ever owned during those sixty years.

My dealership (Sheehy nissan Glen Burnie, MD) stated that they would not put anything other than synthetic esther oil in the new Maxima. I bought my 09 new last saturday, luckilly they gave me the option of adding their VIP service which cost a few extra hundred on the price of the car but then the oil changes are only $20 for life, free scheduled maintenance and carwashes, as well as other small discounts and a few hundred off any future car I purchase from them. I'm no mechanic so I went with it, it is very strange that some dealerships "require" it and others don't even mention it. I figure better to be safe than sorry, and price wise it made sense to me.
After reading this I'm guessing they say that just to try to push this "VIP" service for all of their new cars. Since with that VIP the standard oil changes would be free but the synth. esther changes are $20. I bet their is a smaller margin than $20 between the two types of oil for the dealership so they say its "required" to make a few more bucks.
Either way $20 isn't much every 3750 miles (what they said it needed). And I'd rather have the peace of mind in running better oil in my brand new car. Just my $.02 but I'm very far from an expert.

Most people only post bad experiences......I have had great service at both Nissan of St. Charles, and Gerald Nissan, both in Chicago area. Im on my 6th Nissan, and because of the service, I will always buy Nissans. And to stay on post, I use Ester oil, and I get a great deal because I am "loyal" nissan. I dont mind using nissan oil to stay in recommended spec, it's a few extra bucks every 3 to 6 months, big deal....
Well I will be insisting that everytime they put in full synthetic ester oil, since that is the way it was sold to me. If they tell me later that its not what they used the manager will be getting a pissed off call from me. My girlfriends father taught the manager what he knows years ago and got worked with him for a long time so atleast I am on good standings with him. The finance guy clearly told me it was full synthetic ester oil used everytime. I even called a local shop to see what they would charge for that while I was in his office (the main reason I bought there VIP service).
and too funny that they will do an oil change for you and put reg oil in it...
I'm doing the same this weekend, I'm currently running Amsoil SSO 0W30 but I have 6 new quarts of Nissan Ester at the ready. Are you going to do the virgin analysis also? I plan to and will post all of my results here in the oil change section of this forum and here http://my350z.com/forum/engine-and-d...-and-info.html for all to read and compare.
