Loud cracking sound w/ XM & 2010
Loud cracking sound w/ XM & 2010
Along with a number of other issues with the 2010 and the radio, when listening to XM I will often get a loud and quick crackin noise through the speakers.
This sound only happens with the XM and nothng else.
It is very noticeable when it happens. But it doesn't happen all the time. Just like every other problem with the radio I have been having it is very intermittent and happens a lot one day and none the next.
Does anyone else share this problem?
I'm sure it doesn't happen with everyones radio so Please post a reply if this happens to you.

Almost sounds like wires are either shorting out or are getting crossed. Peculiar that it would only do it on XM though. My XM in bad reception areas just goes dead, it doesn't make an audible sound.
That's kinda what the noise sounds like too, a real loud static sound for a split sec from either the right or left speaker at a time. Very weird that it only happens with XM. I've never had XM before so I didn't know if it was somthing on their side.
quality wise, XM/Sirius is really horrible.
Narrow streams per channel, but digital. It's also line of sight to the sky. No sky, no signal. Of the few saving graces it has, some of the stations have limited/no commercials and generally keep the same category of music they claim. The really big one is that it's all over North America. You could start in Maine with the same station and end up in S. California. Never have to touch the dial.
If every station does this and you have a clear line of sight to the sky, then you probably have issues. If it's just a few channels that does this, it's probably XM/Sirius' fault.
If it only happens in certain areas, there's probably a terrestrial broadcast near the same freq's as you drive that will wipe out the Sat Signal.

Thanks again for everyones feedback. That's why I love these maxima forums.
Push for a swap of the XM receiver. I'm almost positive that it is still a separate unit. I doubt the problem is the antenna because the antenna is usually an it works or it doesn't item.
I'm am glad I recorded the noise on my iPhone. I hate having problems that are intermittent. The people think your lieing to them when you tell them the problem. I was getting upset because it was my second time to the dealership with a radio related issue haveing only owned the car a month now. The service advisor (guy that does the paper work is telling me they can't do anything if they don't hear what I'm decribeing. He wouldn't even listen to the recording I made. I finally spoke with the manager of the service department and he was willing to hear the what I recorded. He seemed to not think I was full of B/S and apologized for the other employee. He asked me more question about everthing from the satilite noise to the USB problem. Then we made an appointment for me to drop off the car and they were going to go over everything and do everything to resolve these issues.
Again, I am glad I decided to record it just incase it was fine when I arrived there.
As far as it being from the weather, it has happened to me onthe clearest of days and when it worked fine at the dealership it was overcast, nasty and rainy. I had though of weather as the problem but ruled it out because of this. I don't know why they would think I was making this up. Like I want to turn my nice maxima in with 1400 miles to them for one of there rental cars. I have no motive for lieing.

I do not have any popping noise with my XM, but do experience a decent amount of radio clarity when listening to XM. I am not saying XM is not clear, I just feel when listening to the FM radio I have cleaner/crisper sound. Anyone experience this?
Just wanted to give an update on this issue. I had my whole radio replaced yesterday and so far today I have not heard that loud noise at all. I am very pleased! Seems the new radio fixed the problem.!!

Are you sure you weren't just experiencing a loss of signal and a fade out? Probably not if it was a loud cracking noise, but if you had the volume up enough, a loss of signal fade out would be startling.
I wish Nissan had installed Sirius specific hardware. I realize the two companies have merged, however, there are still MANY differences in the programming.
The BIGGEST difference is in the reception quality of the two. Sirius was originally later to market than XM because they were optimizing their satellite technology. XM rushed to market and rushed the development of their satellites.
I can pass under highway overpasses all day long and NEVER get a fade out or loss of signal with my Sirius receiver, however, if I switch over to the XM receiver built into my '10 Max, it'll fade out constantly just driving down a tree lined street! And, that's with NO LEAVES on the trees yet too! I've gone a 1/4 mile into the tunnel in Boston and still had reception on my standalone Sirius receiver. My built in XM receiver fades out just knowing the tunnel is coming up.
Heck, I was at the carwash last night and as soon as water hit the XM antenna, the radio faded in and out. My standalone Sirius receiver kept right on chugging and that was with the antenna inside the car!
This is my second experience with built in XM vs standalone Sirius. I'll be sticking with my standalone sirius receiver and NOT getting an XM subscription.

Yea I'm sure i wasnt just hearing a loss of signal because the sound I was hearing was real loud as if the wire on the speaker was grounding out and it would only happen to one side at a time. Either the left side or the right side, not both at the same time. The sound was nothing like the loss of signal sound trust me, with XM I know what a loss of signal sounds right. You were def right in your compairason. I was listing to XM all morning long to listen for the nasty sound ( which I never heard
) and just driving up to the window at a Burger King to get my crossiant I got the no signal because of the rain cover. Funny.....
