just bought a K&N air filter
I have a K&N filter alone in my maxima. I dropped it in the day i got it. Some people swear by it and others don't. I did look into a K&N intake for the maxima but don't honestly think i need it for my daily driving just becouse im in traffic most of the day. Personally i had many K&N intakes & just filters as well in my cars i've owned and can say that i had no issues with them other then them getting dirty after a while which is normal with use. With a drop in filter i can just replace, with a intake the same, you can clean well and not have any dirt issues. I guess this all depends on what you like and what may work for you. I just like the sound from it mainly, the power im not looking to go crazy being 290hp stock. I would like to see some pics after you install and feedback as well. I can't seem to find others with K&N intake on their 7th gen.
For those of you who has a CAI, buy the HydroShield Pre-Filter from Injen. You can also find them in ebay or autoanything.com.
Found an interesting article on google about air filters. The guy was an engineer and he performed his own tests both flow and filter ability.Flow wise all were pretty much the same,K&N was 0.18% better than a factory paper filter!!!Makes you think if it's worth the extra money???
Last test was dirt filtering, the 2 worst were amsoil and K&N,followed by foam then best was stock paper. His dirt tests were with 500 miles and the swatch he had for K&N was black as night!!(can you imagine how dirty it will be at 50,000)Won't be going in my engine anytime soon.
So it seems best bet is stock and change often.

I didn't have any problems with HKS foam type filter I had in my Supras. The biggest disadvantage using foam air filter is cleaning it.

So my K&N filter comes in tomorrow and I am really excited. Is there anything I need to do before I drop it in? or is it ready to go? Also, it is a good idea to save my stock filter as a back up for when I am cleaning/oiling the K&N and leave it to dry?
No, it doesnt take that long to dry. I have a 99 Max with a K&N in it over 250K and no issues.
Harsh, you got the drop-in panel filter instead of the new intake? How come?
Serpent, after thinking about it for a while, I decided I didn't want to take that step just yet so I ended up getting a K&N drop-in filter.
I put it in yesterday, and I notice a slight change in engine noise but I don't know if I can tell any thing performance wise. I turned off the radio and drove around with the new filter for a bit, and heard a VERY slight (really have to listen closely) whistling kind of sounds - has anyone heard anything similar or know if it is normal..I dont know if I heard it before with the stock filter, is it bad to keep switching the filters to compare?
Thanks!

I would double check that you got the air box closed correctly. It's easy to snap it shut and not get the full seal between the 2 two halves of the box.
Yeah that is what I am afraid of that I didn't seal it properly, I will check that thanks
I used a K&N drop in for about 5 years in my Mercedes. Did I notice any power gain? No, a 1-2% gain on a 300hp engine is not noticeable, aside from butt-in-seat perception. I was not willing to pay for a true dyno run for such a comparison.
But then I read a more thorough analysis that showed the slight air intake improvement was offset by the fact that more air = more dirt passing through, and I ended up back to stock paper. I never had any problems though, as most people who over-oil the filter are the ones who complain about blown MAFs on various forums.
Properly oiled, I'd say thee is no harm to using these long term, and saving a bit of cash in the end. But nobody has yet to objectively measure actual RWP gains that I know of.
The best benefit of the K&N, if you are bored, is to go to a Jiffy Lube and watch the sales guy scratch his head when trying out the usual "We should replace your air filter" pitch.
