Nervous about holes being drilled to add an OEM spoiler...should I be?

I just bought a new 2010 Maxima 2 weeks ago and really would like to add an OEM spoiler. I'm willing to be bent over by the dealer and have them install it, so that's not the problem. I'm just nervous about them drilling holes in my trunk. I am concerned with this compromising the integrity of my clear coat (don't want it to chip near the holes they drill and have it spread, if thats even possible) and rust in the future. I'm also worried it wont be perfectly lined up, as it would have been if I were able to buy it with one (unfortunately none in the color I wanted).

Has anyone had any issues with adding a spoiler AFTER they bought the car?

I know I'm probably just being ridiculous/paranoid, just wanted some reassurance.

Yes, the OEM spoiler has a 3rd brake light. They also remove the old 3rd brake light from the inside and install the same cover piece that would have been there if you bought the car new with spoiler.

How much are they charging you for this? mine was near 600, so not that willing for a good cigarrette after its all over etc.. c but just curious, did anyone ever see any other sites that sell other spoilers that could work on the maxima that anyone else is considered? I like the spoiler, just have seen some that made me wonder if it would work on our cars.

I did my own spoiler install and it wasn't a big deal to drill the holes, I have no leaks and I had no problem running the wire through the wiring harness plastic cover that is already along the trunk lining.

I like the fact that my spoiler has the brake lights, otherwise in my opinion it would look a little too plain and not match the LED taillights.

Go for it Bro, but just ensure you do a good job of pre-marking your areas to drill before you start.

best wishes

If you don't mind, could you answer the following questions I have about installing it myself...?

1) Did you use a genuine OEM Nissan spoiler?

2) If so, did it come with a template for drilling the holes?

3) If not, how did you measure/mark the holes to drill, and did you drill from the outside or from inside the trunk?

Thanks a lot.

1. I bought mine off of Ebay

2. No template

3. I measured the holes by the size of the screws (you want it to be as snug fitting as possible) and I drilled from the outside in, I marked the holes with a permanent marker. First I placed the Spoiler on the exact position where I wanted it to be mounted and I had another person hold it in place, I then used some masking tape to mark an outline of the positions where the spoiler would go (this helped to ensure the positions where the screws/holes would be drilled) would be the correct spot.

I hope this helps, it's always better if you get another person if for nothing else other than to ensure they hold the Spoiler in place or to ensure that you are lining everything up properly.

Best wishes.

Thanks. I guess what I am trying to figure out is how did you line up the screw-holes on the spoiler with where you were drilling from inside the trunk? Does the trunk have premarked spots or something?

Thanks again

No, that's another reason why you need a second person. I mounted the Spoiler in the spot were it was gonna be set, of course I removed the fabric mounted to the inside of the trunk, when I left the Spoiler mounted and taped an outline where it goes I used my judgment and the judgment of the other person to mark spots on the top of the trunk where the holes needed to be drilled and on the inside on the very same spot.

I hope this helps, you're gonna have to use your imagination a little bit to decipher what I'm saying above but get that other person to help you with this.
