GEAR SHIFT PROBLEM

Got into the car and when I turn the car on the it doesnt not want to go from "park" to "drive" or to any other gear

Plus the ABS Braking system lights are on in the dash which were never on

The dealer said they will replace the "Brake Switch" as it does get faulty but now they changed it and says it not that

They are saying maybe it was the place where I had the HID's, Prestige Alarm or the DVD Headrests installed

I told them it couldnt have been because I had install those things 1 year ago, and why would it happen now..?

Its still at the dealer as they cant find whats wrong yet

Anyybody here has had any similiar problems with the 7th gen or before..?

Thanks guys -

Like Hamzer asked - are you able to turn the car on?

Do you mean that you can't move the shift lever - like it's locked? Or are you able to switch to D but the gears are not going?

How was the car performing the last night you had it running?

Found some info from this link: http://extreme-check-engine-light-co...light-repairs/

sorry guys I just got home -

The car turns on, steering wheel moves, just when u press the brakes and move the shft gear ; the shift gear doesn not move to either "park" , "neutral" or "drive"

1. Nissan mechanics said that when the brake light fuse is blown the car will lock itself from driving and you would need to replace the fuse to make it switch gears

2. Nissan mechanic also stated it locks itself if the brakes are shot, or if the ABS lights come on, which in my case the ABS lights in the dash where on -

HERES MY VERDICT that Nissan gave me -

...Its been at Nissan Rt 46 in NJ since 9:30am, they called me at 2:30pm and said it was the Alarm that I had installed over 1 year..

I told them how was it the alarm, when the car never had this problem...

They said the mechanic disconnected the alarm and that was the problem, so they said it was 6 hours of labor AND NO PARTS at an amount of $668.00

Which I said is bull****, from 9:30am - 2:30pm is 5 hours and they couldnt find anything in 5 BUT to say it was my alarm that was installed 1 year ago...

I TOOK the owner of the place where I installed the alarm 1 year ago with me to Nissan so HE can hear it from their mouth that it was the alarm that was giving me problems and NOT Nissan

My alarm guy said that, the alarm that he installed was not at fault and did not mess my car up..

So Nissan charged me 6 hours of labor at a total of $668.00 that INCLUDED them to disconnect 1 alarm cable !!....I feel like they didnt fix anything !!

Super mad now...!!...I left the car there, will pick it up on Monday...Super upset

The obvious point to consider is when the alarm is disconnected does the car work. It seems it does. So how can an alarm work for a year and then kills the car electronically? Does the alarm mimic the OEM disable protocol, i.e. ABS light on, work brakes, etc.? You really can't blame Nissan for the 6 hours because solving these electronic failures is oftentimes a hunting expedition. Maybe you can compromise.

So if it is going into gear with the alarm disconnected then it does fall on the alarm. The alarm worked for a year but maybe its causing some kind of short now and that's why the lights and the resulting inability to shift. Did the lights go away once the alarm was disconnected?

So your saying when you start your car, you can't shift to Park?? What do you start your car up in, somthing other than park??

I'm sure you didn't mean to write that. Anyways, after the car has started if you press the brake you should hear a relay click if you listen closely allowing the gear shifter to move. If you don't hear that click I'd say you either have a loose wire or fault solenoid

CONTACT NISSAN! THAT IS BS! If you car will not get out of park your brake/lock switch is faulty. Tell them to plug in the alarm and try it in front of you. Then when that happens take a small flat head screw driver and open up that little tab above the shifter and insert the screwdriver in it. This will release the shifter and prove that the switch is defective. 6 hours is bs if you went in with a light on. Did you authorize more than one hour in writting?

Has it been answered, if the alarm is disconnected and the car is fine, then it's the alarm, turn the power back onto the alarm and problem returns, it's obvious what the problem is.

Do a google search on stereo/alarm/ICE or in car entertainment, I have read many a horror stories on how a simple install cause tons of damage, expensive damage.

My brothers car had a problem, and after many hours at the dealer, it was something he installed, they disconnected it car worked fine

That is the magical wonder of electronic gremlins, and modern cars are amazing, they will reset and fix the issue but eventually all the reseting will eventually overload what the actual problem is, and the problem will show itself

IH8SPM, and all of the other guys who have responded.....Nissan of 46 stated that that have changed the "Brake Switch" to see if that was the problem, they said that wasnt the problem, suppossedly they did not know what the problem is, 5 1/2 hours later they told me that its the alarm..?...

Yes I did open up the little tab by the gear shift and use a screw driver press it down and THATS how I was able to move it from park and drive it to the dealer..

NOW I want to know how to find out if "other" customers have filed complaints on this particular dealer NISSAN 46 of Wayne, NJ

$700 is way too much to access something that I never signed off on and I dont think the alarm made it go bad (after it being installed over 1 year ago)

Going tommorrow to pick it up, dont know what to do...Still pissed!!

That is a stealership if I ever saw one. I drove down to their used car lot once to buy a honda that was listed at 8k which at the time was good. When I got there the car was a total wreck and I mean that literally in every sense. The car was listed as having had multiple accidents and still need major repair and they offered me a $100 discount if I bought it that day. Anyway my question is how many miles do you have on your car that you are paying for this anyway? Why are you taking it there? Route 46 and 22 dealers are the worst in my experience. Make sure if you have not already to have them document exactly what they did because on a 2010 everything is covered, and I would know I'm almost at 5k in warranty.

I'm at 22k miles on it

I went to Route 46 Nissan because it is the closet to my house (5 mins away)

I havent sign any papers whatso ever with them, they never made me sign any paper work stating an amount or a bill..They called me on the phone saying you owe us $668.00 for work we did when I never approved any work to be done on it 1st.

NISSAN 46 IN NJ ARE SCAM ARTISTS!! ----> never go there !!!

Keep post alive! We have a car with less the 36k miles and they are charging him to replace a factory item. I have a pending thing with Nissan and soon as I get an answer I will post a new thread to share the details with you all. I'll be on gmail if you need to reach out.

that's the thing about nissan that makes me weary to get one again, although I really want the 09+ maxima. what a sexy beast.

nissan dealers try every way possible to get out of a clear warranty work.
