Strange brake problem. Thoughts?

Well it started yesterday morning, but i thought maybe i was imagining it. Now i know i'm not. 4 out of 5 times when i brake now, no matter what pressure i'm putting on the peddle the car will brake normally for a couple seconds then there is a "pop" in the peddle and all of a sudden the car brakes much harder without adding any additional pressure to the peddle. It doesn't matter if i'm feathering them or hard braking. I wish i could describe the "pop" better, but there is a slight vibration in the peddle and a "pop/creak" noise when it does it. Almost as if there is an imaginary notch that the peddle is "jumping" out of, but without the peddle moving downward any more.

Has anyone else experienced anything like this? My previous max didn't do it. Any thoughts on what it could be?

Sounds like it might be an ABS issue. I had something similar with a faulty ABS on a Mazda Millenia a couple of years ago. I would brake normally and then a pop and the brake would actually let go rather than brake harder. Never resolved the ABS issue just got rid of the car. Maybe your abs is kicking in with too much pressure.

I just dropped off my 10 max at the dealer for the same issue. Rep called me back told me that the brake booster was bad and that I shouldn't drive it at all. It will take a few days to get the part and they gave me a rental until fixed. I recommend you take it in asap. Hope this helps.

Agree with the others, take into your local Nissan stealership ASAP! Something is not right with your brakes somewhere!

Yep my dealership said brake booster as well. They're waiting on the part which is fine since i'm traveling for 2 weeks. They also replaced my front rotors and pads which is nice i guess.

2010 MAXIMA BRAK EPROBLEMS

I have been experencing an annoying problem with my brakes. The brake pedal feels OK until it pops, then the brakes become unstable. The first time I noticed it was in heavy traffic, sometimes I use the paddle shift to down shift, the problem hit just as the down shift occured and about sent me thru the windshield. I called my local Nissan dealer and ofcourse there was no report of recall!

There was no TSB for the brake booster at the time i took mine in. They should be able to identify the problem quickly if it is the brake booster though. Took my dealership about 10 minutes.

My '09 Maxima does this regularly. I figured that was normal (I'm a newbie and got the car last week). Are you sure it isn't a way of the car to intentionally soften the decelleration under slight pedal pressure?

You guys are making it sound like I should take mine in.

That sounds really weird, could also be a electronic issue as well.

nice info there steveo! thanks for posting that.

And to all that have this issue. Go get it checked out before its too late. I really doubt that you would loose your brakes. However you could loose your power assist. Which to a new driver can feel like no brakes.
