Front Suspension POP/Knock

Hello All,

New member, searched thoroughly and found TSB's for Strut issue/etc. My vehicle was not in the affected lot numbers/date ranges. My max is an 2010, 14k miles.

I'm having a Pop/knocking noise coming from my front suspension. When I'm in drive going over a bump or entering a driveway I can hear it from the passenger side, and recently I've been hearing it come from the driver's side when in reverse.

I noticed this mainly happens when it's cold or has been in the garage all night. I'm assuming it is a strut or bushing but would like to get some ammo from the forum, hoping someone has already gone through this. I really hate for me to drop off my vehicle at the dealership secure alternate transportation and have them come back with..."We couldn't find anything" wasting my time which has happened before with warranty work in previous vehicles.

Any help is greatly appreciated!!!

Aaron

tell your dealer to apply tsb NTB10-020,this fix will make the "pop" noise be a little annoyance in your past.they replaced both my struts, insulators and bearings but the noise continued only untill the tsb listed was applied, since then I have never heard a pop nor a peep from my front suspension.

Maybe this is the problem if you have the Dual Panel Sunroof

http://forums.maxima.org/7th-generat...anel-roof.html

Mine started making this noise a few weeks ago and i thought it was the front suspension. It would only make the sound once in a while so when I took it in to get checked it was hard to duplicate the sound. I am now hearing it all around in the car and after reading that post I think I am having the same issue. Its very easy to duplicate now by hitting any bump, pothole or pulling into my driveway. going to take it back in for a re-check.

Mine is a 2010 SV Dual Panel Roof with 5k miles

I knew Id hear of someone having that happen. Im getting extremely tired of these vehicles "warranty". I am a service person in a different industry and have to sometimes tear machines down to the frame if I need to... It sucks how the manufacturer only pays the dealer so much time to diagnose and fix things...they probably pay them to shrug it off in most cases.

my car too made that noise,it always had to be driven for a bit 30 minutes or more before the pop started and twice the dealer could not duplicate the noise.I drove around till the pop started(look for a parking lot with lots of speed bumps) went and picked up the service manager and drove to the parking lot with speed bumps and then he finally agreed about the noise.the only fix for this is the ntb10-020 it involves putting rubber tubes on the coil tops and thus eliminating the noise... demand this tsb!!!! I made 5 trips with various fixes for this issue and the last (ntb10-020)was the only thing that stopped the noise, trying to save you the hassle I went through.

I have this same noise and I'm also not affected by the recall. My 2009 Maxima was, and that noise was different.

Ok so I had the dealership perform the NTB10-020 this past saturday, apperantly they did both front and back. My car now seems to ride tighter which is alright with me.

BUT the front knock is STILL there. Primarilly happens now when the vehicle switches directions from drive to reverse and vise-versa.

I have resheduled another appointment but im getting a little frustrated with this problem.

I hoping someone can help me get more ammo. Can anyone explain or show a parts breakdown on the strut assembly where these parts are used?

Maybe it is the ABS.. I don't have the full tsb but here is a summary..

NTB10-077
Description: ALL NISSAN VEHICLES; ABS SELF CHECK NOISE
• Clicking, knocking, clunking, buzzing, or thumping noise coming from the engine compartment area; and
• The noise occurs only once during the first few seconds of driving at approximately 16 MPH; and
• The noise occurs only once per ignition cycle (ignition OFF > ON) and does not occur again until the ignition is cycled.

Yea Ive heard this while rolling as well, thank you for posting man! But my noise happens when moving the vehicle from stop or changing directions.

Just curious, Is there an actual fix for this being it is a TSB? Funny I remember my 01 Xterra doing this lol

My 2008 Altima 3.5 did it also. I never bothered having it looked at or fixed. Don't know if it eventually causes any failures or if its just an annoyance.

I had this same exact issue and the tubes over the tops of the coil springs solved the problem right off the bat. Over 10K on the clock since that service and no issues at all.

Man, it sounds like I lucked out with my dealer where I bought my car from. They take everything seriously and won't give the car back until they can replicate the problem.

Could just be the sway bar bushings groaning because of the cold weather. Mine used to do that until I put some thick non-petroleum based Valvoline grease on them. Boom, no more problem!

+1 regarding the sway bar bushings causing a 'knocking' sound in the rear. Dealer changed mine yesterday and the knock is gone...for now.

:UPDATE:

So my max had its forth check-up at the dealership on Saturday, I showed up about an hour before they opened up to make sure when the shop Forman rode with me would hear the pop...of course no pop.

I left it with them all day, asked them to leave it sitting then simply put in reverse. I called around 3pm and they said they couldn't replicate the problem. At this point I was past frustrated and requested they keep the car till next week until they figure this out I can't keep bringing the car back and forth.

Magically around 4pm the shop foreman did what I asked, heard the pop and knew exactly what it was....

He disassembled the front brakes, cleaned, lubed all parts, and changed the pads. NO MORE KNOCKS!!! WOO HOOO!

Either way, hopefully this helps anyone who may be experiencing the same issue after the TSB on the struts.
