tilt wheel issue
tilt wheel issue
I heard some people having an issue with the gears stripping out on these. Mine is starting to whine each time it tilts up. Its a high pitch sort of sound. It goes in soon to be looked at but I wonder if the gears gave out.....
what are some symptoms? the reason I ask is because I've had to "re-set" the program on my steering wheel a few times now because after a few weeks the wheel seems to go down too far beyond the settings.
Not to worry, if the gears gave out it wouldn't move at all! The high pitch sound is just part of the assembly rubbing..on my 09 a little dash treatment tends to keep it at bay.
Is that what you mean?
My car is currently at the dealer and this is one of the issues I mentioned.
Please note, this is not the issue where the steering wheel motor is making noise. Knock on wood, mine operates normally except for above oddity.
thanks
Max
My steering wheel started doing this yesterday (3-23-11). It does not pop when the door is opened. It goes almost all the way down by itself instead of the usual position. No problems with the telescopic movement. It goes down no problem but will go up very little. When I try to get the wheel up, it makes the grinding noises as described. I have an appointment with the dealership tomorrow. With the steering wheel low, it's kinda hard to see the gauges. Being 6'7" does have its problems.

I have easy access enabled, so every time I get in the car the wheel column goes down. I noticed that over time, it comes down little more. It is not obvious at first, but over time you can see the steering wheel starting to block gauges. It takes maybe 3-4 weeks for it to become obvious.

yes this is my issue as well! please keep me posted on what the dealer says. lately ive been having put use the power adjustment button to raise the wheel a bit everytime i get in the car.. i gotta reprogram it AGAIN.
Wait, I thought I was going crazy. I know exactly where I set my wheel, and in about a week or two, the wheel goes to a position lower than expected. What is this? They've replaced some module and it does the same thing. It's really freaking annoying. And the dealership thinks i'm crazy. The wheel is not physically making any noises. Any help? Thx.

Had to reset it myself, thanks to this board for easy instructions. So already a few people responded that their cars are doing the same thing. We can't all be going crazy, right?

At first I was going to drop this, but now I am thinking I should document it more and provide info to Nissan directly. I plan on taking pictures and measurements.
It would be helpful if you mention in this thread whether you are having an issue. I don't know if the Easy exit system is on all Maxima's or only SV Premium. I know that you can also disable this system, so obviously if yours is not enabled please don't comment.
thanks

well I'll be rolling 15k miles in April so when I drop her off at the dealer I am going to have them address this. They've been good so far with figuring out little things so we'll see what they say. (Habberstad Nissan - Huntington, NY) This steering wheel thing bugs the **** out of me.
My steering wheel makes a whining noise when it is moving as well. I read in other threads that there is a TSB related to this because it means it is about to break. I'm going into Nissan in a week or so to see if they can address it, the solution is to replace the motor I believe.
Mine gets lower and lower over time. The seat also goes forward. I turned off the seat go back function since I keep the seat all the way back anyway and that seems to have eliminated the problem for the seat. I guess our cars don't like tall fat people.
Auto tile stopped working at 45k
Mine was whinning for a while and finally quite completely at 45k. The steering wheel would go all the way down and not come back up. I had to force it up manually and turn off the auto function. I also had to remember not to unlock the door from the drivers side. The dealer replaced both motors under the extended warrantyl I'd didn't ask how much this would have cost if I did not have teh warrenty. My suggestion is don't ignore the whinning because it will lead to something worse.
The dealership replaced the tilt motor on my 09 Max. I was told that the motor alone was around $300. Since she was already in the shop and just went past 30k miles, I figured to gp ahead and get the 30k preventative maintenance done.
Bump (encase anyone else sucks at searching like I do).
Mine did not give any signs of going out. It worked great till I came back from lunch today, and just quit. The motor makes noise like its trying to work, but the wheel just kind of pops in place. Doesn't raise or lower. Going into the shop on monday. I should be fine because its an 09 and and I only have 9,000 on it.
Is there a way to manually raise the wheels? I didn't look too hard, but I would love to get it off my knees...

Tis the season.
Mine went out last week as well. Had to order the parts so will take it in on Monday. I believe they said the damage would be on the order of $650 for both motor assemblies to be installed.

Update
I should have provided an update since I started this thread. The fix was a simple stop at the dealership and some lube. I also had them do the same for my sunroof since it was binding a bit when closing.
All is well. My dealership has a brand new black GTR on the showroom floor-that is one sweet car.....
