$4 Torque Android app + $40 eBay OBDII bluetooth = read/reset CEL codes and more

Anyone else who has an Android phone needs to at least try this out, go grab a cheap OBDII bluetooth module off eBay and buy the app Torque. Using both my phone and my tablet I can connect to my 09's ECU and not only read/reset CEL's but create a bunch of virtual gauges showing info from the engine such as: speed, RPMs, engine load, fuel level, horsepower, intake air temp, mass air flow rate, mpg (this doesnt seem accurate), throttle position, timing advance, and a bunch of other sensors. Can also supposedly give you rough time estimates on distances using the GPS but again probably not too accurate, fun to mess with though.

Definitely worth $44 to be able to see this info, and the OBDII sensor+app work on tons of other cars too. Just need to figure out how to dock my tablet in the car so I can use it now while driving. Maybe I can charge coworkers to read/reset their CEL's now...haha

The Android app uses the internal accelerometers and GPS, along with info from the OBDII bluetooth connection. Mine has trouble staying connected, so I may just get another one. Its a really eye catching display!

So far mine has stayed connected flawlessly. Only thing is when I put in the parking brake gotta be careful or I could knock the OBD device out and bend the pins or something. Definitely cool to play with and the first time I come across a CEL I know I'm going to love it.

If thats the case you can simply open the OBD BT device and see its only 4 wires that need to be connected to the port. You can very easily splice those instead of having it hang from the port if you want it more secured into place. I did it with mine, but I used bullet connectors incase I want to take it out quickly for any reason. I will post pix when i get a minute.

The only app I can find on the ipad is called something like dash command and is $50. That's a little nuts.

Lol, it's balanced on top of my shifter. Still looking for a mount...I'll let you know if I find one. For now I've been using my phone mostly until I can find a tablet mount that works. When I can find a tablet mount this things going to my by navi unit/music player too.

Yeah they have that for Android too, bit pricey. I saw Rev for iPad as well but it's up there in cost too.

You don't need a tablet or anything, it does work with smartphones too so you can dock your phone somewhere and use it as extra gauges or whatever. It'll be nice the first time I have to pull up to Nissan and I read them my CEL error code. My personal mechanic already thinks it's the ****.

Just found REV and unfortunately it's not optimized for iPad, it's iPhone optimized and it's still $40. Apps are so overpriced on iPad/iPhone.

Hey all,

I just purchased a bluetooth adapter on ebay and bought torque from the android market but after trial and error and then speaking with Ian (The developer of the Torque app)

It turns out 4th gens are not "fully" Obd-II compliant and Torque will not work on my 97 or 98 maxima or anything with a VQ30.. Ive started a dialog with Ian on the torque forums but looks like im out of luck!

If one of you would like to purchase the bluetooth ebay adapter i bought its available for $35 shipped! Its pretty much new as ive only tested it on a few other cars besides my maximas. Works great just not on VQ30' ECU's!

I thought i would post it here before it hits the classifieds section here at the .org

PM me if interested ..

Just want to make sure everyone knows. All apple apps for OBDII require a OBDII wifi, cost $100, big difference from $29-$40 for a bluetooth ODBII for an Android. Learned that the hard way.

If anyone is interested, dashcommand is now only $9.95 on googleplay store for android. I just installed it on my nexus 7 gen2 and it is very slick, much more polished/refined than torquepro. I have this bluetooth obd2 scanner device

BAFX Products Bluetooth OBD2 Scan Tool for Check Engine Light and other Diagnostics - Android Compatible : Amazon.com : Automotive BAFX Products Bluetooth OBD2 Scan Tool for Check Engine Light and other Diagnostics - Android Compatible : Amazon.com : Automotive

but i will probably upgrade to this one as you can leave it plugged in and it won't drain your batteries.

I use dashcommand on my iPhone. Love the app--excellent for monitoring temps and just generally knowing what's going on with the car/engine. Resets codes and everything. I use it with the BT1 OBDII adapter. Works perfectly.

I paid $49.99 for the app a year ago and it was worth it. Price has since been reduced to $9.99. It's a great deal.

Agreed. I'm running a cheap OBDII device and using a different app called aCarputer GPS/OBDII its pretty cool and seems to work fine, but HP/TQ readings are horribly inaccurate. However you are supposed to input a bunch of perimeters, like car weight, Addition weight, Transmission drag %, etc, then supposedly it will give accurate TQ/HP readings.
I also have the "Torque lite" app that works in conjunction with their "Torque scan" app. but it does not seem to pick-up my OBDII, so most of the gauges don't work.
