Steering wheel noise (rubbing)?

Hi all,

I'm not sure if I'm the only one with this issue. When I turn the steering wheel, in either direction, I hear what I can best describe as a rubbing noise coming from the steering wheel joint. It is loud enough for a passenger to ask "what's up with your steering wheel" when fans and radio are off.

I plan to ask the dealership, but I'm curious to know if other hear the same thing.

Thanks,
Tarrick.

This doesn't seem to be the well reported tilt gear issue that is mentioned on this forum (and presume what you're referring too).

I just noticed this rubbing/squeaking sound from my steering wheel for the first time a couple days ago. Only hear it with radio off & HVAC off. 2009 "S" manual tilt, mid-low position.

Now we just need an idea as to what this could be!

I've noticed this same issue in a few Muranos, Altimas and Xterras I've driven. Sounds like a current-model issue that isn't related only to the Maxima.

I have the same thing in my mazda. Does it have telescoping steering? If so, I was told to push it in and out a few times and it should go away. I had my wheel set all the way up and when i moved it down the sound went away.

I was also told it could be my springs binding when turning...but i doubt ALL of you have your cars lowered

After reading the issues you guys posted about your steering. I went thru this same issue guys and my suggestion is dont wait or dont try to fix the issue on your on. I know im the new guy but needless to say I went thru this issue and waited till my car had 37000 miles and the extended warranty didnt cover this issue. The dealer had to replace both motors on my steering wheel because of the telescoping and tilt. Price for both motors was about $1200 but after talking with nissan corp they had me pay only $175 for all the work and only gave me a 1 year warranty. It's actually doing it again so I'm going to take it in next week or so.
