according to a Nissan master tech I spoke with the CVT automatically is downshifting when you brake, giving you that brake assist you mentioned. i asked him if manually downshifting for the CVT was bad and he said "not at all, in fact it does it on its own"

Yes-I know what you are talking about but never viewed as an "issue"
I believe the CVT transmission does this to be prepared for a lower ratio when you start from a dead stop. In other words, its "downshifting" if that makes sense. CVT's are excellent transmissions and can handle so many ratios they are constantly at work at lower speeds or stop and go driving....

I actually brought mine into the dealership yesterday for this issue. The tech said there is a brake assist from the transmission. It is used when the car is going downhill . The transmission will also do it when stopping. I found it really annoying when braking hard as it felt 'jerky' around 10 mph, as if it weren't letting go. I had them turn the feature off. I think the problem is still there, my wife thinks I am crazy and am just looking for things to be wrong, but a few high speed stops will confirm this week when going back and forth to work. If it is I am going to ask to have the TCM replaced. I asked if they could only disable the brake assist when stopping, but the entire feature is on/off only, no tuning or making exceptions for certain events.

This is correct. In fact, this feature kicks in when you let your foot completely off the accellerator on a downslope, whether you put your foot on the brake or not. This feature was also on the 6th gen, although not noticed there by as many folks as have noticed it here on the 7th gen.

I love this, and use it extensively when driving on downslopes in mountainous areas to save wear and tear on the brakes.

Those who do not like it need only keep their foot on the accellerator pedal with very slight pressure and the downshift will not occur.
