Engine shuts down @120Km/h

Hello Everyone

My friend had a problem when he was moving at 120km/h when he puts the gear on the Neutral the engine shut down... he drives 2011 maxima.
He asked me to do the same, so i took my 2011 maxima and drove at 120km/h. Then when I put the gear on the Neutral the engine shut down.

My friend only found out about this issue by mistake; after that my car did the same thing. I think this is a major problem and it has to be fixed...

I'm just sharing an experience that every Maxima driver should know about.

Note: The Maxima is a gulf-spec.

I think you guys in the emirates dont have the CVT in the 7th gens... Maybe its a safety precaution for your transmission or something..... I have done this several times on a altima with a CVT and nothing the engine just idles while your on neutral..

ThX for replying
Actually we do have CVT transmission, but i think this is a safety precaution for driving in the high way because lots of people use the cruse control and many times it doesn't cancel.

Why do you put the car in Neutral if it is CVT?

Maybe because it is an Automatic, it locks it out.

I was thinking, since the cvt always gears down when you take your foot of the gas, then going in neutral can get you a longer coasting without decelerating too quickly?

Why would you put the transmission in neutral going that fast anyways? (120 km = 75 mph) It's not like gas is expensive in the UAE to begin with.

Pointless to put the car into neutral, what if a car gets in your way or a person? Keep the car into DS or S when going such speeds. Definitely get it checked out, but your not driving a s2k or a nismo.

Thats def. not normal and not safe, its never happened to me. I do it as well to save gas when on a rolling highway going down hill and my car has gotten to around 90mph coasting downhill in neutral and engine keeps running.

Most states have laws against coasting in neutral on public roads. Those laws are a carryover from the days when most folks did this in an attempt to save fuel. I did my share of coasting back in the late 1940s and early 1950s, before those laws were passed.

You are correct that the engine dying at speed is very dangerous. Very few drivers on the road today have any experience at braking or steering a car without power assist. Either one requires a lot of strength.

$32 to fill up a tank...
Well I guess I have to consider the difference in currency and minimal paying wages and such.
