Cone air filter on stock intake tube?

Has anyone ever tried this? Buying, say, a K&N cone filter and getting rid of the airbox and putting it on the end of that stock rubber tube? I know we wouldn't have the mandral (?spelling?) bends, but it would be a heck of a lot cheaper than a SRI and I would imagine it would gain more power than stock. Plus it would probably still sound cool?

Thoughts?

Dont think its been done before... I dont know if the weight of the cone filter just being put on the end of the stock rubber tube would work though sine it wouldnt be supported

Hmm, interesting. It would probably need a short bracket to give it some support. I'd love to see the hp numbers with this setup compared to a $300 setup... it wouldn't have the heat shield, but who knows how much those REALLY do anyway. I wouldn't think much.

Now that I'm thinking of it, where does the plastic intake piece go that heads towards our bumpers/radiators? Does that really pull cold air from the front of the car?

May I suggest a dry flow filter? Oiled filters suck.

Honestly in my testing the stock R2C and Takeda heat shields weren't that helpful when idling. Some guys here are experimenting with building a shroud that would connect up to the OEM grill duct to work very much like the stock intake just with better air flow. And yeah that plastic intake piece attachs directly to the grill duct and pulls air from the front of the car

Ok good to know Ghozt, thanks so much. I'm going to scope out that plastic intake piece and see if I can just aim it at a cone filter on the stock tubing. Most cost effective, still have the cool air hitting the filter while moving, and I think it will give me what I'm looking for. I don't need every ounce of power out of this thing, just want a smooth sound with a little gain if possible. If I make this happen any time soon I'll report back on it.

For future searchers, it's not going to happen. There is some type of sensor plugged into the stock airbox that would need to be plugged into... something. Can't just stick a cone filter on the stock tube.

Crap.

Saving up for aftermarket intake...
