Exhaust Tips

So the inside of our exhaust tips are painted black, well at least mine are. I'm assuming this is a factory thing. My black paint is chipping in there, so I decided to investigate...

I took the dremel tool with a wire brush attachment and buffed the paint off. I think I can get a nice chrome shine if I work at it a bit! I'll attach a few pics here, the first is the black tip with the chipping issue, the second is the tip I buffed out. I only worked at it for about 5 minutes... after some solid buffing I think I can get a solid chrome shine.

Anyone else do anything with the inside of the exhaust tips?

All I used so far is a wire brush attachment on the dremel and then cleaned it up with some lacquer thinner. All the wire actually wore off of the bit, so need to get a couple more at Lowe's tomorrow to do the other one (looks so stupid now with one black and one chrome LOL).

I'm going to look into wet sanding and compounding it to get it as shiny as possible.

wow! looks awesome...but for some reason i dont think its paint...i think its more like exhaust film.
I tried cleaning mine with a crome/metal polish paste and it did come right off with that. I tried a small section, so nice to see how it will actually look!
Post a pic of when you get both done! Maybe that will change my mind about doing quads

It does seem a bit tougher than typical paint. I'm going to grab a few items from Lowes on the way home tonight and finish the job. I'll definitely post a few pics once they are done.

Looks good man. I can say that I do miss the cut of the exhaust on the '09 as opposed to the new version.

Thank you!

By cut do you mean the angle the tip is cut at? It's different on the newer models?

I really like these tips as well, but do wish they stuck out juuuuuuust a little farther so you could see a bit more chrome... nit picking now, but whatever

I'm keeping mine black, not into that "funnel look" with the huge stock oversized tips.

What type of paint can be used to repaint the tips after cleaning?

I'm not sure how hot the tips get, but regardless I would play it safe and use any paint that's meant for high tempuratures. Auto parts stores will carry this, but you should be able to find it at the big box stores as well.

I guess you can call it the angle at which it was cut. They basically rounded/rolled the edge of the pipes more, so it looks more like a traditional exhaust setup than what it was with the '09.

I think some people had said that it might have been because the edge was sharp and could possibly cut you if you weren't too careful.

Ok this is the best I could do. Not sure if I like it or not but I'll give it a whirl for a while and see if it grows on me:

Didn't read this until now. I'll take pics in daylight soon and post. I'm also interested in seeing how long it takes to turn black... drove 2 hours today and they look the same as the pics above
