Window Tinting in NJ

Window Tinting in NJ
Hi guys, I was chatting with my tint guy over the weekend about what percentage to go with. He said most of his customers go with 35%, but the little swatch sample at 35 did not seem to make much of a difference at all. So I told him to go with 15%, but even that did not seem to darken the window all that much, so I'm thinking 5% would do the trick.
What have you all gone with?
One rub though...NJ law says you cannot tint the front side windows so police can see what you are up to if they pull you over. What you get is the look of a Lincoln Town Car used by a limo company, with just the rear windows dark and fronts not...which IMO is ugly.
However, there is a medical form that can waive the law based on vision problems:
http://www.nj.gov/mvc/Licenses/sunscreening.htm
Has anyone tried this? My doctor is pretty stric and I doubt she'd sign off on this.

Ya that makes sense. Most people go 35% because with the added factory tint it looks darker. I personally go with 40% as I don't want to get hasled by the law. Even with 40% and the factory tint added I am at like 32%-33% which is still under the legal limit of 35% in CT.

My previous vehicle I had 5% on the rear and 20% on the front it looked great transition wasn't to bad I am planning on doing my Maxima next month. In New Jersey you will pass inspection because they only check for emissions however depending on where you live the police will pull you over and most of the times you'll get a warning again it all depends but regardless whether you go with 5% 20% or even 35% you still run the risk of being stopped. So I say screw it and go dark ... Good Luck !!!

I would go 20% on all the windows, also consider what exterior color you have and interior color, black/charcoal interiors makes the tint seem darker, tan seats not so much, as well as the paint color, dark tint blends in well on black cars and dark cars, other colors the tint is way more noticeable

Here is my Maxima with 5% tint all around. Looks great and works amazing keeping the sunlight down and the heat but is annoying to drive at night making turns and driving thru parking lots. I have 15% on my civic and I would suggest that for an every day car. Which it is.

After thinking about it (my appointment is not until next week), I will likely go with 35% all around so as not to attract too much attention.
I really do not like the look of dark in the back and light in the front. The car is white with black interior.

My wife's Maxima is also white w/black interior and I'm happy with the 40%. Here's a picture of it.

If I were you I would go with 15% or lower on your back windows and rear windshield since in NJ they can be anything you want and do your front two at 35%

But in the end, your idea is probably the best and I'll learn to like it.
If not, I'll Plast-dip all the windows!

I was thinking of that too, but I just don't want to look like a Lincoln Town Car that car services use. Since I'm usually the only one in the car, it seems dumb to have almost no tint where I'm sitting.

There is a medical exemption form that I'll see if my doctor will fill out. I have an appointment on Monday for an eye exam.
If I can get that, then I can do 15% all around and be happy. It gets you a special sticker that goes under the regular inspection sticker, so if I get pulled over, I can point to the sticker and be on my way.

i been driving my acura tsx with dark tints all around except my windshield in nj never had one issue with them yet + my car is a real head turner with mugen kit and custom paint job but i do roll my windows down and i dont drive like a nut cause its just a show car... supposedly nj the cops arent allowed to pull you over for tints for a first offense but some cops do but thats what i heard i may not be correct.

Well, as it turns out, my eye doc would not sign the form attesting to one of the eye diseases that would allow the exemption, since my eyes are fine (damn ethical doctors ).
So I'm going in tomorrow for 35% all around. The difference is not enough to attract too much attention, although I'm sure I'll complain about it not being enough.
I'll try to post a picture for anyone interested in what a white SV with black interior looks like at 35%.
