Battery Dead?!?

Went to get in car this morning, wouldn't start. I would hit the brake and the start button and the key light would barely flicker on the dash. Brake pedal was hard to push. The car wouldn't turn "ON" but would turn to ACC. The horn wouldn't work either, headlights wouldn't turn on. The interior lights turned on because I opened the door, I turned those lights off then the horn worked. Ill have to figure it out after work. Just wanted to hear some opinions and thoughts from you guys.

I'd bet you lunch that it is a faulty battery. Best way to check would be to try and jump it?

I just had a beefier battery installed today while getting routine service.

Tired of running the car while parked waiting for someone. Nissan put a motorcycle battery in these cars.

Was the battery. Would of been a lot eaiser if the piece connecting the positive cable wasn't corroded to ****. Ended up having to get a new piece from the dealer because the nut wouldn't come off.. See the pic

That's ugly! I just had the battery replaced after 24k miles on my 2010. It was not maintenance free, so I was keeping it filled, but it still was not much of a battery. The Dealer replaced it with a 2 year full replacement 4 year prorated after that battery for about $70 installed.

Greasing the battery terminals avoids corrosion. I do it every oil change

Either grease or use the spray on terminal protector on your new battery. I still have the original battery in my '09 with 49,985 miles and the terminals still look good.

OEM battery in '09 through '12 Maximas was a five hundred and something cold cranking amp thing. After years of complaints, Nissan changed to a 700 CCA battery for the '13 Maxima.

Nissan dealers (other than those still trying to dump their inventory of old batteries) are now supposed to be replacing bad Maxima batteries with the new 700 CCA battery. The price is $129 minus the $14 they give for the old battery, which means $114.

Check your weather strips and make sure they are on correctly under the hood. I live in North East and I have never seen a connector become that bad!

Red Top

For the money they are charging for the upgraded battery, buy a red or yellow top battery. No maintenance, shock proof and no liquid. Best money I ever spent on a battery. Will last min 6 years, more if not in an extreme climate.

Bought the car used a month ago.. Maybe the guy before me was a "bad owner".

Too late for me, but good advice for others. The price that Lightonthehill quoted several posts above is what my dealer charged. I still am leery of listening to the radio or making calls without the engine running.

Ghozt, You're right, who cares. I deleted the messages and pm'd the guy offering my apologies. (I was having a father/son moment).

Sorry, if I want to replace my dead battery on my 2011 Max by myself (it died this morning), do I need then to use some kind of code to be able to activate the radio after the new battery is installed? I am afraid I do not have this code available, and I have read several opinions whether I need it or not. Could you please, confirm? Would that be safe just to disconnect the old one and put the new one in by myself without getting the dealership involved?
I realize I probably would need to re-enter my radio stations and programmed seat positions, but that is OK.
Thanks so much guys.

IIRC, the only thing I had to reset was the moon roof. No codes, instructions in OM.

The codes you are thinking of exist on some cars, mainly Honda/Acuras as far as I know.
Other than that, you may lose a few settings since the power going to the ECU/BCM/TCM/InsertAcronymForCarPartHere is lost temporary and their memories are reset.

I can't wait to get a maint free battery.

BTW, despite reports, the 2013 battery is still 540 CCA

Thanks Guys! I called CAA (AAA equivalent for Canada) after work, and the guy showed up within 20 minutes, jumped started the car, and tested the battery. The report revealed the battery (still the original, 2.5 year old) had a bad cell and a replacement was highly recommended. So, I bought a CAA battery from him for $150 and he also quickly installed it on a spot for me for free. Pretty convenient. From what I was able to notice it read "35C" on the battery (do not have any more information, but the feedback for their batteries is pretty good and they give you a 3 year replacement warranty on it). Now looks like I need to reset the moon roof indeed. . I will take a look at the Manual how to do that.

Wasn't your battery still under warranty from Nissan ?

How many CCA's is the new one ?

The new battery is 550 CCA.
Good question about the warranty on the original one. I am not sure. I was happy to have it over with quickly and "on the spot". So, I guess, even if I overpaid, I did this for the convenience and saved time driving to the dealership tomorrow, arranging to change hours at work etc. The $150 included 13% tax, quick installation, 3 year replacement warranty plus another 3 years - pro-rated warranty.
Thanks.

Thanks.

I would have gone for more CCA's. Is it maint free ? If you still have the old battery the dealer might gve you a new one or some type of credit.

$150 seems steep for 550 CCA. I see a group 35 Diehard Gold at Sears, 640 CCA and maint free for $116 . 36 month full replacement, 84 month pro rated.

I have had these diehard battery's last 10 years in Connecticut and Minnesota

I have an 09 SV and had to have the OEM battery replaced about a year ago and the dealership put in a 700 CCA Nissan battery. Nissan must have a boat load of the 550 CCA batterys if they are putting them in 2013's.

Why the car ever came with a 550 CCA is beyond me. Some people seem to like batteries that you can add water to. I am 44 and never even had one before. The Diehard Golds have always been great for me.

I was waxing my car this weekend and afraid to put the baseball game on the radio as I thought it might kill the battery and I had no car to jump it off

I'm thinking of just telling the dealer at my 7500 mile service I had to jump the car a few times and see if they just pop the 700 CCA battery in for me.

The November issue of consumer Reports just came out. It rated the EverStart Maxx-35N & S as the best buy in Group 35 batteries. They are available at Wal-Mart at $100. This battery beat the Die-hard by a wide margin

As far as the cheaper Everstart being better than Johnsons Diehard, I don't care what consumer reports says, I have had Diehard Gold North batteries last 10 year in the extremes cold and heat of Minnesota.

Johnson is known for the Diehard, to have the cheaper Walmart battery be better makes no sense

At the top of the budget category is the EverStart Maxx, distributed by Walmart and produced by the same company that makes DieHard.

I didn't read the article but best BUY doesn't necessarily mean it's a better battery.

I'd be shocked if Johnson was producing a better ( and cheaper) battery for Walmart than they do for Sears with the Diehard.

I imagine Sear would be a little pissed also.

Only 2 reviews but neither seem that great

Keep in mind that the point that I made was for the size 35 battery, for other sizes other makes are better buys.

I'll stick with the Diehard, First it's only $16 bucks more. Ther are not many reviews of that battery but most are not good

As I said, Johnson isn't making any of those Walmart Batteries better than they make Diehard...................close, possibly, better, no

Comment:
Purchased this battery and exactly 2 weeks after the warranty the battery shorted out and overflowed acid into the engine compartment. It just became weaker and weaker. The battery was hot when I took it to the store, I presume due to the internal shorting. The associate rolled it back outside, ha. Typical Wal-Mart quality.<br />If you going to have the car for under 3 more years, this battery is fine. Otherwise, get something else.

Comment:
Bought one 5 years ago - died just after 5 years

Bought an EverStart Maxx battery at Walmart in 2008. Replaced in bad winter weather 2010. Now, in 2013, again the thing needs replacement.

Battery went bad right at the 3 year mark but Walmart replaced it with an exchange battery

My wife bought it last Aug 2009 and replaced it today June 29, 2013
