Looking to replace just the mufflers

I'm pretty happy with the performance of my maxima (R2C, Y-pipe), but i want a little sound. I was thinking of replacing just the mufflers w/ universal Magnaflows. Does anyone the size that would replace the factory ones? Has anyone done this before?

I'm thinking center/offset?

I was looking for the size of the in/out and to see if it center/offset etc. Whats the largest muffler we can fit under there if I go universal 14", 18"? I'd just stick on the stock tips.

Was there any major sound/performance change with just the y pipe install? I'm assuming there would be a sound difference, or is it not very audible?

I don't believe having a Y-pipe will necessarily make it louder, it will alter it and probably make it sound a bit better.
I don't have a good answer for your size question but MF makes a couple of universal mufflers with tips that look pretty good. Part numbers are 14827 and 14829.

Racingline claims a performance increase but they don't documented it via dyno charts. The design concept for HP and torque increases make sense but who knows how much is actually realized (along with most performance mods) on this car without a proper tune.
Sound wise nothing major but there is a bit of difference. At idle it's subtle but to me it sounds more "pipey" for lack of a better term compared to the stock exhaust.

I ordered 2.25" because that's whats stock, I hope it isn't 2.50". so it kind of slides onto the original piping then welded.

Yeah not sure if the MF muffler will be a direct fit as the stock max muffler has an offset inlet I believe.
My plan (if I ever get around to it) is to use the MF with integrated tip and just have the mufler shop bend new pipes and add a new attach flange at the Y so you would essentially have a axel back system that would bolt on in place of the stock set-up.
That way if you ever wanted to go back to the stock exhaust it would be as easy as a couple of bolts.

Edit: Yes the stock pipe is 2.25 if I remember correctly.
