Just got the Bully Dog GT
Ok, I went for it...
Now I followed the instructions perfect. It gave me options to set my rev limiter, and top speed... But how do I adjust timing? It walked me through those 2

I believe you need to run a idle air relearn after you advance timing, idk if the BD will do that or u may need to get it done with a consult3 machine
Also make sure u do a review on it with ur max bc the BD doesnt have a good name for our cars
So lets hear ur take with ur "tun3" if u wanna call it that and performence changes if any

I chose premium. With everything turned up it its a totally different car. Today on +4 deg I messing around with a friend and his 2013 S4 and I was right with him the whole time. I am VERY surprised at all the people who think the BD is a waste. The $389 for what it did to my car with the option to return back to stock was more than worth it. Hands down the best performance mod I have to date. Maybe it's the updated software or that my car is 2011, but I can't see why people hate on it so much. I have the R2C, y-pipe, and just replacement magnaflow mufflers.
You can feel the difference on the butt dyno. At +4 timing, you can really pull some G forces... Although, the timing advance doesn't always stick.
It's not a real tune... But I think its pretty good without spending too much money on a more sophisticated tune and dynotime.

Well, I'm not sure for one which BD Tuner you have. When I originally purchased the Power Pup (They retired this model), it was a total waste and you absolutely felt no differences in power or anywhere else. There were numerous complaints to which BD ignored and did nothing with and now for all of the people who still have their BD PP Unit and has had the upgrade from Nissan to their car's brain the BD PP Unit will no longer work with the car's new programming.
If you plug in the old BD PP Unit you will get a response that tells you to contact BD but they will not assist you unless you have one of their newer tuners and there is no download support for the old PP Unit.

So your 0-60 and 1/4 mile track times are what....?
Initial base timing is dependent on Coolant temperature. This is the parameter updated via the GT "special vehicle options". When coolant is too cold or hot, timing changes. But the timing increase with the BD GT does remain. I never seen it not.
With two different monitoring devices, Torque Pro and BD GT, I confirmed a .2 tenths reduction in 0-60 and the same held for 1/4 mile times. Trap speed was 99 mph. All was done the same day, same road, weather etc. This included returning to stock, re-flashing the premium tune, etc.
Moreover, I found increasing timing from the factory 14-15 degrees initial, made the car slower. Let me explain.
With the Torque Pro and a plug-in, Knock Detector, there were cases of spark knock and corrections in timing reduction (1-2 degrees) from the factory ECU; only in the higher mid-range at WOT. With or without the BD GT installed, initial timing is the same as factory, however, I'm sure the timing tables have been tweaked for more aggressive timing, hence the spark knock when adding more timing. Note: I can only run 91 octane, so others with 93 may not have this problem. Just because there's no audible knock, doesn't necessarily mean none exist. Likewise, the STFT and LTFT trim banks 1 and 2 look better than the factory tune as well.
In the end, with a few tools, you can see there are subtle modifications in the tune which help the car. The only drawback, and to me what prevents the Maxima from being quicker off the line, is the WOT restriction. For this reason, I just purchased the UpRev Osiris Tuner edition and moving on from the BD GT. I'll report updates later, in another thread.

From my experience, the +2 timing sticks. The +4 timing does not stick as the Nissan ECU has a way to override it. I'm not a automotive computer expert, I'm just saying. The turbo-like pull from a +4 timing doesn't stay past a couple days. That's why most people who put the GT on their cars here do only +2.
As for WOT, do you know of any fixes for that? I once read about something called Sprint Booster. I wondered before if that is even worthwhile and if it eliminates WOT.

They do make one for the 7th gen maxima. This site has it for $290. Don't know if I wanna spend so much on that.

I wonder how the Bully Dog advanced timing and the Sprint Booster combined effect would be on the driving experience. Like.... +4 timing AND the most aggressive setting on the Sprint Booster.

The key or most important reason for tuning, is the throttle control and torque management. I've been logging, and can clearly see the ECU starts closing the throttle at higher speeds, approximately ~85 MPH. Moreover, there is a dip at lower speeds right @ WOT. I have the graphs so it's not something I'm assuming or guessing.
Anyway, once this is addressed, the car should feel much better.
I haven't looked at the Maxima's ECU at all, so Im not sure of its function. Take this with a grain of salt until I can look at the ECU a little.
I read the above saying that +4 degrees of timing is eventually reset due to the BD increasing timing over the ECU's base timing more than 17 degrees. In theory, this would easily occur as almost all ECU's monitor and self correct their functions over time. That's the nature of piggybacks and that's another reason I love stand alone ECU's.
If someone wanted +4 degrees of timing all the time, it can be accomplished by clamping the signal the ECU receives the motors timing from. This can be done with an inline resistor. Find out the voltage that the ECU receives for +17 degrees and match that with a resistor of the same voltage. The ECU would never see the true timing.
With that said, use extreme care as you can then inadvertently set the timing to anything and fry the motor.....

Fry the motor... No thanks. Lol.
I keep the timing at +2 everyday now. The Maxima has a nice pep to it's step.
What I do like about the BullyDog is how it lets me see over 30mpg on the highway. I can tell that my gas tank has more mileage now than before when I didn't have the tuner installed.
