Window Tint

2011; I went to the shop and my only real option is the 3M 50%. The next level, 3M 35% would take me below the state limit of 35%. So, my question is: anyone go this route? Happy? Pics?

I did Colorado state limit 30% all around and love it. I'd be happy with 35% as well. 50% would work for heat but not much for privacy.

Yeah, MD sux. The 50% is the film. They said the net would be about 42%.

I went 30% all the way around. Alabama legal limit is 33% but they will not bother you over a 3% difference, they think the tester needs to be calibrated

Ok. I got a response from the MVA. I need to get a letter/certification from my eye doctor stating my condition and just keep it in my car. I'm going to go with the 35% 3M film. Will I have any issues at night? Thanks for the help.

Only issues at night will be getting used to the light deflecting around the defroster lines in the back window....nothing major, should take a few days to get accustomed to it.

You'll love the look going the same shade over all your windows....what color is your ride?

I have 15% all the way around with 5% on the sunroof and 75% heat film on the windshield. I love it compared to my Camry which had 35%.

I've had a lot of tinted cars.
IMO 35% is perfect. It's dark but not dangerously dark at night for the driver.
20% at night is too dark.

Mine has 35% on all windows. And the front Windshield is 50%. It's great the windshield makes the sides look darker from the outside, and when you look at the front of the car you can't see in.

racerbox, that looks sexy! i just got 35% all around and i agree, its the perfect shade. I wanted to get the roof tinted but it just slipped my mind. I had 35% on my old car (10 civic) also, but it was a different brand of film so it was a little darker. If you're concerned with the legality, compare the 3M with other brands, just in case.

My opinion is 50% isn't worth spending the money.

While I'd like to go darker, I don't feel like violating the law risking fines plus the expense of having it removed. Reducing by 50% is still pretty significant.

+1

35% minimum or don't even bother IMO also.

Any tint is illegal in my state (besides factory) and although I wanted to do 20% I went 35% because, although illegal, it's not "over-the-top asking for it" and it adds visual appeal to the car.

If I were to ever get pulled over for it then the officer would get the "really dude?" treatment and I would have the ticket dealt with.

Do what makes you happy

I currently have 38% all around with 50% on the windshield and it does the job, but if I could do it again I'd roll slightly darker with 32% since I have black interior. 33% is our states' legal limit for passenger vehicles.

I'm gong to tint the sunroofs this summer with a 50% or 80% metallic film to cut out the heat....and if need be go with 32% on the windows (it'll be my first summer owning the car). My guy uses Sunguard Shadow film and I've had it on all my vehicles without any problems. The link below is pretty cool playing around with the different films and VLT's that Madico/SunGuard offer.

Our laws are 50% here and I Have 35%. On a gloomy winter day it looks real nice and dark but on a sunny day you can see in just fine.

Ok, sorry to bump. I have the letter from doc in hand. The tint guy is trying to upsell me from 3M Color Stable to Crystaline-a jump from $300 to $500. Thoughts?

I have 15% rear and 20% fronts. It's dark but not too dark, especially on sunny days. You can still see inside when it's a bright day. I didn't want problems with the popo here in VA, otherwise I would've done 5% all around. They don't seem to bother you unless the tint is completely black and they can't see anything at all.

BTW, most cops around here get 20% on their personal cars, so anything around that should be OK but any darker and you're risking it.

Hey honestly I have 35% around and I love it, but additionally, they are in accordance with state law. In my city (Chicago), it's a risk and you will be ticketed for going under the legal limit. My buddy got 25% all around and was ticketed. The ticket is not cheap, at least in my city ($+200). As much as I would have loved to go darker than 35% all around, I would definitely stick within the constraints of city law.

Not trying to thread jack but what is a reasonable charge for the tint? I've gotten quoted $150 + $20 total $170 for the front strip at 2 different places The place I am planning on going with said it'd be $220 for the windows and tail lights together if they could do them (said they had never done a Maxima).

What do you guys think?
