Cleaning Tires?

Hey guys, I need to clean my tire sidewalls really well. Remove dirt, armor-all etc. I was told an ammonia based product. All i can think of is Windex lol... Is there a specific product that can be used for this? Or does anyone know of something household I can use without hurting the rubber?

I use dawn liquid with warm water and a soft scrub brush, it does a great job. I've never seen the need to buy a specific cleaner for rubber sidewalls.

I would be careful using dish detergent because it will strip any wax you have on the wheels.

I never waxed my wheels, are you referring to some sort of protection on them from factory?

This is why I ask... I was in autozone and i came across Dupli-Color Hot Tire.. I figured I give it a shot to see if I like it. Its a white paint pen to color in the lettering on the tires in my case (Hankook Ventus RS-3). But the surface need to be spotless.

Just referring to any wax you may have put on them. Waxing the wheels helps protect them from the elements and any salt on the roads, and makes them easier to clean.

Personally, I would just use car wash liquid and warm water, and a medium stiff bristle brush and give the tires a good scrubbing.

Do you really want white lettering on the tires?

Use an SOS Brillo pad to clean the sidewalls, the pads will not harm the rubber at all. My 69 Cougar has raised white letter tires and I clean them exclusively with Brillo pads.

If you don't already know, you'd be amazed as to what a regular rock with juts and edges will do for the raised white-letter tires. You're welcome in advance

I've used Westley's Bleche White tire cleaner with great results. I think it may be called Black Magic Bleche White now. Just use care when spraying, it's pretty strong stuff.

Cease and desist with the harassment or I'll hand out vacations.

First wash the dirt off the tires.

Then spray on a Tire Foam, and leave it on to dry. I like Amour All Tire Foam. Be sure to wipe if off the wheel if you over-spray.

Then use a Tire Gel. Microfiber wax-application pads work really well for this, particularly if you have a plastic velcro-handle. I like Meguiars.

This will keep the tires very presentable for quite a while. Periodically you can spray them down with a protectant (I like 303 Products 30350 Aerospace.) When you use it, just let it dry on the tire... don't wipe it off. After it's dry, you can wipe it smooth with a towel, if you want.

Oh and vball is spot-on with his advice... you absolutely want to keep your wheels waxed. Who doesn't wax their wheels? That was weird.

There you go, buddy. How's that?

OMG, no. Don't do that. It's a 7th Gen Maxima, not a '77 Camaro.
